Dark Tower after dark

Peter David reports on the Dark Tower midnight launch event at Midtown Comics last night (or earlier today, actually):

Just got back from the midnight opening at Midtown Comics for the first issue of the Dark Tower series. It was a little odd to be taking the Long Island Railroad into the city and be reading the “New York Daily News” and suddenly my name leaped out at me from the “Tuesday in New York” column. Yes, granted, I was described as being one of the artists on the book (along with Jae Lee) but, hey, at least they spelled my name right.

I got nervous as I approached the store because, looking up from street level at its second store location, I couldn’t see anyone in the windows. I thought, “Geez, nobody’s here.” But the angle was deceptive; the place was packed. At least over a hundred people there, plus an assortment of on-line video folks conducting interviews and such.

A Comic Shop in Orlando has pictures from their event on their MySpace blog … they had more than 40 people show up at midnight.

I called a couple places yesterday, no place in town was opening at midnight. I wasn’t planning on going, but I would have blogged about it.

We had a great turn out, about 35-40 people total. Everyone left with 2 or 3 copies of Dark Tower…but not to collect, they’re for their friends or family! Lots of new faces, which is always great.

It sold out at the store I go to. I’ll have to make some phone calls tomorrow to see if any other shops have remaining copies. Geez, I knew this would be big….but not “sell out in three hours” big.
