As I was surfin’ the Net for stuff to share with you, I came across a recommendation for Marisa Acocella Marchetto‘s wonderful graphic novel Cancer Vixen from what I thought was a very unlikely, mainstream source: Good Housekeeping.
“Laughter crops up more than you would imagine in cancer books. There’s a healthy dose of it in Cancer Vixen, by New Yorker cartoonist Marisa Acocella Marchetto, who uses bold graphics in bright colors to tell her tale of battling and beating breast cancer.”
Marchetto’s book was one of a half-dozen selections Good Housekeeping’s “Book Babes” Margo Hamilton and Ellen Heltzel recommended and the sole graphic novel of the bunch. If you want to know more about Marchetto’s great book — a love story in the same vein of Tom Beland’s True Story, Swear to God — check out Graeme’s link to a interview strip she did with Publishers Weekly’s Calvin Reid posted in December and a spring 2006 USA Today piece that tackled cancer comics.
