I already knew about this thanks to HarperCollins’ press catalogs, but apparently it hasn’t been
official news until now. According to this press release, Tokoypop plans to publish manga based on Erin Hunter’s popular “Warriors” series of books. The first title will be out in May and titled “Warriors: The Lost Warrior.”
Warriors: The Lost Warrior manga series, created by Dan Jolley and
James Barry, tells the untold tale of the feline hero Graystripe: his
life with humans and his ultimate quest to be reunited with his clan.
Graystripe’s story in the manga series bridges the gap between Hunter’s “The New Prophecy” and the next installment of the Warriors novel series “Power of Three.”
I’m not at all familiar with this series, but apparently it’s about cats. So it’s got that going for it.

The book series is for young readers, upper elementary grades on up. Most adults will not have heard of the series, but it has been popular in libraries and sells pretty well in bookstores. The manga series will also be aimed at young readers. We librarians think that is a good thing.

My daughter is in eighth grade and has been reading these books for at least two years now. She spends her own money to buy them in hardback (an unheard-of luxury in our house) even though her friends buy them too. They seem to be as addictive to the tween set as Death Note is to the grownups. (Actually, she reads Death Note too.)
Anyway, I think they have hit on a real winner here. My daughter and her friends all read manga and they love the Warriors, so I’m guessing this will be a case of two great tastes that taste great together.
