Wha-? Why are you talking about the Alice in Upskirtland book when there is a frickin' KISS comic coming out? Where are your priorities, people? Paul Stanley himself said it was going to be "so heavy."

Man, I am so getting that. KISS = quality.

I think that it's obvious that Koben asked a well-intended question and that the question was taken out of context. Tim notes that no one wishes to bash Koben, but it's the wording of Koben's question that is used not only in the title of this entry, but in repeated quotes for emphasis.

This entry reads like Graeme saw something that he considered offensive at first glance and began to write without really thinking about it or re-reading it. The context of Koben's question is pretty clear, especially when you consider that it starts with "So", a word that denotes that question as a follow-up to the previous point.

Whether or not the book is gratuitous cheesecake or not anyone's particular cup of tea is beside the point. Believe what you want, buy what you like on that score.

My objection is centered around the fact that Graeme took a fellow Newsarama contributor (aside from doing interviews, Koben is a valued Best Shots team member) and did his best to make him look "creepy" (Graeme's word, regarding Koben's question). That's just plain not cool.

Thank you, Jones.

It WAS meant as a quantifier. I WAS following up on the denial of said content.

After seeing preview art, I was curious (as I thought many would be) of how Rich felt portraying that element.

Why that makes me some misogynistic perv who wants ass-shots in every comic I read, I have NO idea.

The disagreement seems to be how to read "decent amount".

Graeme seems to have read it as "legitimate amount" (as I did). On that reading, the question sounds like you're endorsing the content. "So you're saying there isn't an appropriate amount of cheesecake?"

But from Koben's comment, it seems that s/he meant it simply as a quantifier. On that reading, the question is a follow-up from the previous one. "So you're denying, then, that there's a fairly large amount of cheesecake, including these examples...?" If that's the reading, then the question doesn't endorse the exploitative content, quite the opposite.

Probably a poor choice of words, but Koben's heart seems to be in the right team-comix place. So why can't we all just get along, and agree that comics suck?

Koben, I know I'm excited on this sure-to-be-monumental "journey into the medium!" The main problem I had with Curses was the lack of upskirt shots of Glenn Ganges' butt. Not enough cheesecake factor. This is a medium founded on "bad girl art," after all. I've always considered Herge, Tezuka, Kelly, and the guy who drew Lady Death to be the fathers of serious comics.

Really, if Bonk doesn't want people thinking it's a T&A book, he probably shouldn't have provided that particular piece of preview art to begin with.

<i>Having read the series script in its entirety, I can easily say that “cheesecake” is a minor, minor element of the whole package.</i>

Leaving aside the question of how much "cheesecake" really shows up in the scripting stages, I think that's actually kinda the problem. If the guy just wants to draw women in skimpy clothing, then go nuts. I think the idea that creepy sexualized images of what is apparently an underage girl are somehow "tastefully and purposefully done" rather than "gratuitous" -- in a story that's ostensibly not about that at all -- is what sets off people's alarms a bit.

Koben--I'm not speaking for Graeme here, only myself, but yes, yes in fact I <b>do</b> "boycott", as in "refuse to go see", two hour films if I thought the three-minute trailer was puerile or insulting or offensive or just didn't interest me at all. That's what trailers are for, to give you a reason to see or not see a film. Likewise, your interview, if you insist on the analogy, was there to give me a reason to buy or not buy the comic. And again, speaking for myself only, your interview convinced me that I do <b>not</b> want to spend my money on <i>Return to Wonderland</i>.

Let me explain something to the blogger. I was given a chance to read the script. Something that had caught my attention was the tendency to highlight the sexuality of the characters. I asked a simple question of the artist, asking if he enjoyed portraying that type of thing. He initially denied its presence. I followed up with examples of "cheesecake" being in the book. I was not celebrating, endorsing, selling, promoting, encouraging, or criticising anything... at all. You might want to take a second look at the interview. In my interviews I do not highlight only the positive elements. It was a question that I felt was valid, and I was curious as to how Richard felt about it. Taking the moral highground is ridiculous on your part. You're going to attack me and the interview I conducted to make yourself look like the savior of the industry? Please. T-n-A has been a large part of comic books for quite some time. Apparently, you missed out on the whole "bad Girl" trend. You may not like having these elements in comics, but to attack me and the work I do for Newsarama is uncalled for. Having read the series script in its entirety, I can easily say that "cheesecake" is a minor, minor element of the whole package. I was interviewing an artist who is embarking on a journey into the medium, and I felt that the question was worthwhile. To single out one two-part question and make like it's an embarassment to the industry is merely muckracking on your part. Please do continue your personal crusade to destroy all comics, and your mission to make sure this series never appears... you know, since you've read the whole thing, anyway.

One question... do you also boycott two-hour films based on their three-minute trailers?

Dominic Sena also directed "Kalifornia," which is a--wait, what's your derisive term, "cinematic"? Anyway, it is a cinematic classic of early 1990s not-indie, not-mainstream cinema (much like "Reservoir Dogs"), only Sena's immediate success didn't work out for him.

None of us are "bashing" the interviewer. We're lamenting an interview that asks a question that contains the following phrase: "decent amount of cleavage, hiked-up skirts, and even Calie in her undies" (and does a layout that emphasizes the cheesecake--involving a teenager).

I really don't understand the bashing of the interviewer in the article. He didn't let the cheesecake factor of the book go unrecognized in the article and made sure that the artist couldn't shrug it off.

And I'm not just saying this because the interviewer is a friend of mine.
