Everyday Static

Bahlactus has a proposal for DC Comics:

When you take it all in, the character that is Static can surpass some of these other “heroes” and give us that next-level format we need from Comics today. Especially in this post-crisis era. If DC had their eyes on the prize, they’d look to resurrect Static and drop him into the mix for the long haul. Get a solid writer on it that understands the human element and the heroism that makes a Comics character real. If no one is willing to step up, then I’d emplore DC to let ME craft his new hustle. It’s an investment in Comics history — an atomic bomb waiting to go off in the DCU that makes it all worthwhile. Some say that you can’t approach these big houses with a new capes story and have any hope of them actually getting down with it. What about a character whose flavor has stamina with the potential energy to embody the iconic values that works so well for someone like Spider-Man?

In the comments, Jeff Munson explains the ownership issues between Milestone, DC and Dwayne McDuffie, but points out that the timing is perfect if they had the motivation to straighten out the legalities.

Perhaps DC simply needs to be convinced that the readership exists?

According to one of the myriad GJ Teen Titans interviews, he wanted to use Static, but the character is tied up in legal red tape.

  2. Live Free or Dan Coyle Says:

I think ex-DC/Milestone editor Joe Illidge said in an interview recently that he had met with Paul Levitz to discuss a Milestone revival, but they’re convinced there’s no market for the characters.

  3. Morrison Says:

I would love to see a revival of the Milestone properties. If they started off with just Static and built an audience, that could open the doors for more of the Milestone characters…

  4. KHuxford Says:

I’d love to see a revival of the Milestone properties.

But the thing that struck me here is Bahlactus falling into the same garbage that every internet fan with a little attention does: “then I’d emplore(sic) DC to let ME craft his new hustle.” All said with the wide-eyed illogical enthusiasm implicit in “an atom bomb waiting to go off”, “potential energy to embody the iconic values”, and “an investment in Comics history”.

  5. Davy Says:

I’d love to see Static used in the DCU, but after the past few years I don’t see it happening. DC (someone at DC anyway, be it Didido or the legal team) doesn’t want it to happen, so it ain’t going anywhere.

  6. Live Free or Dan Coyle Says:

Well, it’s certainly saying something that Marvel seems more interested in having Dwayne McDuffie write for them (by giving him a flagship book) than DC (who recently gave him a few fill-ins, albeit one in the middle of a big run on Action Comics).

  7. Rob Staeger Says:

At the Philly convention last year, Didio also expressed an interest in Static. I hope DC and McDuffie can come to an agreement so the character doesn’t languish.

I’d also like to see more of Icon.

  8. Fred Weaver Says:

DC is the main reason why a Static revival won’t happen in comics. (Cartoons and even films are another story.) For a Static comic to be a hit, DC would have to:

    1. Let Milestone keep FULL ownership of the character to maintain what makes him cool.

    2. Develop strategies to AGGRESSIVELY market and sell the comic to millions of “Static Shock” cartoon fans who don’t hang out in comic shops.

Until DC is willing to take the above steps, they will be overshadowed by companies large (e.g., Marvel) and small (e.g., Street Legends Ink) who are at the forefront of the Black superhero revival.

  9. DBHughes Says:

It’s a shame. I would much rather have Static than that Blue Beetle crap.
