Whilst Google searching, these particularly weird drawings caught my eye, but I hadn’t heard of Beasts: A Pictorial Schedule of Traditional Hidden Creatures, a cool 200-page collection of creatures lovingly illustrated by nearly 100 artists from the alt scene, including Craig Thompson, Bwana Spoons, Ron Rege, Jr., Eric Reynolds, Colleen Coover, Brian Ralph, Jordan Crane, Johnny Ryan and Anders Nilsen, now available from Fantagraphics.
This collection, compiled by Jacob Covey, spans “mythological or folkloric storytelling. These creatures originate not as entertaining images, nor as an individual’s story, but as cultural entities, whether still thriving or long extinct,” according to The Oregonian.
Why am I telling you about this now? An early signing has already happened in LA and others are coming fast in Portland (tonight from 6-9 p.m. at the Grasshut) and Chicago (March 9 at Quimby’s). Stay tuned for more details about other possible signings near you. I’m hoping for Austin or Houston…
