Brevoort: Here’s to Johnny.

February 2nd, 2007
Author Graeme McMillan

Tom Breevort looks at someone who continues the Mighty Marvel Tradition:

There are guys who can draw prettier, there are guys who are maybe better draftsmen, whose stuff looks more kinetic. But in terms of being able to deliver both power and subtlety, of being able to tell a story that communicates directly on a visual level, [John Romita, Jr.] is the man.

Johnny can draw anything, any character, and imbue them with both attractiveness and impressiveness. But his real forte is as a storyteller. We bandy about that term an awful lot speaking about comic books, but when you get right down to what it means–communicating a story visually, JRJR is second to none. He’s just about the best natural comic book artist there is… It’s readily apparent that John studied under the tutilage of his father, as well as that of John Buscema and Jack Kirby. He’s the perfect blend of the strengths of all three.

Tom accompanies his tribute with previously unseen art from the Stan Lee/JrJr “Fantastic Four: The End” project, which pretty much proves his point…

Romita, Jr. is the reason I love comics.

To me those pages just proved to me that JrJr can only draw one face and reuses it constantly, never really understood his popularity
