Do you think Supergirl has ever been afraid?

Supergirl, from "The Super Dictionary"

File this under “Things Could Always Be Worse,” I guess. Just as Supergirl editor Eddie Berganza kicked off another round of discussion about DC’s current take on the Maid of Might, Scans Daily posts this slightly disturbing gem.

My first thought was that it’s a drug-addled Kara Zor-El chasing a rolling quaalude across the floor of a Soho loft during Jacqueline Susann’s forgotten run on the title. But then I realized it’s actually from The Super Dictionary, the exceptionally odd book published in 1978 by Warner Educational Services. (Lucky for everyone, Scans Daily has several entries devoted to it.)

But seriously, why is Supergirl crawling on the floor with a rat? And is she winking at the reader or at Templeton? I’ll leave the boots alone.

Damn, Melrose, I come to this blog to be entertained sure, but I’m impressed with
    A) the above line for sheer hilarity
    B) first Valley of the Dolls reference of the day in pop culture and before 8 AM no less…

Someone has taken the trouble to draw a single thin line across Supergirl’s buttock, to show that, yes, she is wearing underpants.

The fact that they appear to be utterly see-through makes it somehow worse, I think.

Roy Litchenstein back from the dead just to claim that image as his own. No-one called him a plagerist for making a million of the skin of Russ Heath’s nose

I’m as nostalgia-obsessed as the next fightin’-pantyman comics lover, so I was shocked when I saw this post as I had completely forgotten aboout the existence of this book. I suppose it’s too much to hope that I can still find it in some dusty corner of my dad’s house. I remember I got the Super Dictionary for Christmas and I loved it. Too bad I didn’t get it for my birthday, though, ’cause then I could’ve worked today’s personal significance into my comment.

It’s a reworking of the splash page from Adventure Comics 401. Lex Luthor’s niece, “Nasty” (that’s what they called her) slips a potion into Supergirl’s water that causes her to become overwhelmingly afraid of pretty much everything.

    Here’s the cover: http://www.comics.org/coverview.lasso?id=23996&zoom=4

The costume she’s wearing was a fan-design, you think her current outfit is bad you should see some of the ones that were sent in for that contest.

Rather, that’s where the original shot that was used for The Super Dictionary came from I should say.
