Can’t Wait for Wednesday

January 29th, 2007
Author JK Parkin

The theme this week seems to be those amazing animals, as the ronin rabbit Usagi Yojimbo reaches its 100th issue at Dark Horse, Fantagraphics debuts the high-end and killer-looking Beasts hardcover, and Marvel brings us the triumphant return of Spider-Ham!

Yes, that’s right … Spider-Ham! I don’t know what else I can say beyond that. Let’s hear from the rest of the Blog@ crew … or from Tom, anyway …

Tom Bondurant’s Pick of the Week

Batman and the Mad Monk #6 (of 6). It’s been a great year with Matt Wagner’s two Batman-vs.-monsters miniseries. Both were inspired by Golden Age stories, but neither succumbed to nostalgia for its own sake. Instead, Mad Monk especially reinterpreted its horrific villains to make them scary for today. I can’t wait for more Matt Wagner Batman.

JK Parkin’s Pick of the Week

As tempted as I am to go for Beasts, I have to give the nod to Usaji Yojimbo #100. It’s one of the most consistently excellent comics out there, and it’s great to see a black-and-white title about a samurai rabbit that’s been published by several different publishers over the years still bringing this level of quality every month. Hats off to Stan Sakai for this milestone.

So what are you looking forward to? Check out Diamond’s list and let us know!

A slim week but I’ll give the nod to the last issue of Batman LODK (#214) a nice one shot story and sure to be tough to find as many last issues are and Uncle Sam and Freedom Fighters #7 which has been a fun book. Also of interest is Ghost Rider Finale which ends the story line in the former Ghost Rider regular series which was abruptly cancelled.

I’d probably pick up Spider-Ham if it weren’t Straczynski writing it. I’ve never really liked his comic writing.

Usagi Yojimbo #100 for me. I’ve been a big fan of the ronin rabbit for many years now, and I’ve had the opportunity to interview Stan Sakai twice (he’s a classmate of one sister-in-law, and his wife is classmate of another sister-in-law, plus I used to work with his wife’s aunt).

I’d be interested if it wasn’t for JMS. He’ll probably have Norman Osborn rape Spider-Ham.

I’m looking forward to seeing how the Titans East storyline starts out in Teen Titans #43
