I left that first volume on the shelf TWICE, and I’m still kicking myself.

    *looks down*

Ha! Serendipity! I made a t-shirt out of that panel of the spider biting Yu Komori’s hand (it’s one of my favourite Spidey images ever ever ever), and I’m wearing it today!

I’ll have to start looking for the original manga again.

I wish Marvel would reprint a complete run of this along with the old X-Men and Hulk manga.

I believe before he goes to kendo practice and gets bullied by “Flash Naruto” that in this edition, the Peter Parker analog either masturbates or has a wet-dream, but I can’t remember which it is. Haven’t seen the book for over 20 years, but I recall reading it and going… what the hell?

  4. Matthew Craig Says:

Rich Johnston had that sequence in LitG, a ways back.

To be fair, most of Steve Ditko’s Spider-Man stories ended with Peter sat on the edge of his bed, trying to decide whether to slit his wrists or have a jostle.

So at least it’s in keeping with the spirit of the original…

That second page does a good job of manga-izing the classic Ditko mood.

Was any of this altered by Marvel in their late-1990s reprints? I don’t remember any wet-dream sequences.

  7. Matthew Craig Says:

I think I must have missed a few of the reprints, so I can’t be sure. They either never got around to reprinting that part of the story, or they chopped it out.

Related: they recycled the same image for the covers of two consecutive issues.

This isn’t helping my buyer’s remorse, you know!

Well, Mile High (first place I looked) has most of the issues pretty cheap, so I’m sure they’re out there.

I have a few of these books in Japanese… Marvel cut some of the gorier bits out of their English translation (which they never finished anyway), plus they skipped around with the storylines, totally ignoring one or two. There was some nudity; if any of that was in the stories Marvel translated I’m sure that went out too. These are some really dark comics… lots of seething sex and social unrest. I’d really love to see Marvel put out a proper digest-format version of this stuff – it’s only five volumes worth of material. Might be a little too explicit, though…
