Supergirl Letter Campaign

January 16th, 2007
Author Lisa Fortuner

Loren Javier, after reading a lament by Blog@Newsarama’s own Carla Hewitt, has started a campaign to get Sean McKeever (Spider-Man Loves Mary-Jane) assigned as the Maid of Might’s regular writer. Those of you interested in flooding DC’s Editorial Offices with letters can find details at One Diverse Comic Book Nation.

I think Kelly’s been doing a decent enough job writing a good supporting cast(if not Supergirl herself), that I can’t really support a campaign to bump him off the title. He’s doing a much better job than Loeb did at least.

Now, one that’d put Sean on Green Arrow(being the single DC title most needing a change) is another story.

  2. Loren Says:

Actually, I was thinking having TWO titles for Supergirl…one that Joe Kelly would continue to write that would be aimed at the adult audiences and then one that Sean McKeever would write in the spirit of Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane for DC that would be aimed more for girls. That way, everybody could have a piece of the Supergirl pie!

  3. Matt D Says:

What does that do to Supergirl and the LSH then?

I think that Waid’s been doing a wonderful job writing a much sweeter, more innocent Kara there.

Can the market really handle three Supergirl titles, even if they had fairly different audiences??

And for what it’s worth, my piece of the Supergirl pie is the 80 issue series by PAD, which is one of the most heartfelt, thought-provoking, spiritual and fun superhero titles I’ve ever read. But I’m not getting that piece back.

  4. Dave Says:

As long as people reading the adult audience book get pieces of the Supergirl pie……

  5. Zeitgeist Says:

If this means that Supergirl could leave Legion so the title becomes good again i encourage it, it really is a shame how bad that comic has gotten

  6. Loren Says:

Matt D, I LOVE Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes. If this one could go back and forth like Superboy could in the original series, I think that would be awesome. But, I actually DO think there could be 3 series because…and, again…I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Waid’s series…Supergirl and LOSH is not really considered a Supergirl title but a LOSH title.

And, I think lots of people would like the PAD piece of pie back, too. :)

I think Kelly is making the book work despite a bumpy transition from Loeb and the intervening Crisis nonsense. Has anyone thought that McKeever might be tired of writing romance comics and wants to do something else? His recent interview hints that he wants to do other kinds of things.
Plus, Supergirl so far is not the kind of character that would fit well into a Spidey F*KS MJ style book. She’s much more of a kickass chik as presented so far.

I want McKeever to get the higher profile projects he deserves and for Supergirl to keep going as is. I also don’t see how readers can call for even more Supergirl books since the two existing titles featuring her are not exactly lighting up the sales charts. Still both are much better than Flash or Wonder Woman.

Louie Longlegs gave me 7:2 for McKeever on Teen Titans; I said OK, but only if that covers spin-offs, too.

  9. Lisa Fortuner Says:

Del Gorky — Since when would Supergirl be a romance book? I figured he would be good because he could write for young girls, not because of romance. Typically, a book for young girls has a prominent female character.

A Supergirl book wouldn’t need romance to make a female character important, since the female character is already the star.

I’d rather start a petition to get Sean McKeever his own creator owned Vertigo series, but the prospect of a McKeever/Norton Supergirl is admittedly enticing.

  11. Loren Says:

Ditto what Lisa said…When I’m thinking a Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane kind of book, I’m talking about outreach potential and not necessarily as a romance book. I think there’s plenty of kick-ass potential in such a book reaching out to girls.

Personally, I think Dan Slott would be a great Supergirl writer.

um, i love reading supergirl because unlike her cousin she is a toublemaker, she isn’t a girl scout, nor is she a goodie, goodie like Superman. Kara is always causeing or getting to trouble. it causes probables for every one else. if they make her less dark, and not so much of a badass girl, that i would think would kill the series. I personally like the spoiled rotten brat supergirl she is much better the any of the supergirls before. they were all terriable and basically just a girl version of superman while this supergirl is totally different in that she is his complete oppiste. this is why i like supergirl but hate superman. for me has long has she stays badass and a brat i dont care who is wrighting it. thats the ways she is on tv too, shows like superman tas, Justice league unlimied and smallville. a change like that could hurt her popularity.

  14. RootBeerMaster Says:

well, since i can’t seem to edit or fix my mistake, i do agree there should be some types of comics for little kids but the truth is most people who read comics are high school and college kids, not little kids. who will hate a change like that, most kids just aren’t that intrested from what i have seen. but they do need a more little kids comics to help with that, but i dont think changeing a charicters personallity is going to help or the right way to go unless you want to ruin the charicter. maybe another series aimed at little kids might help, but its no reason to ruin a good thing.
