Yorick vs. Mario: Would Y make a great video game?

From Y: The Last Man

Packet Switched Press has a compelling post about whether or not Y: The Last Man would make a great video game:

GAMEPLAY: As much as YTLM is a story about Yorrick’s struggle to survive, get to the bottom of the plague mystery and re-unite with his girlfriend, he is always surrounded by others vital to his quest, most importantly Agent 355, Ampersand and Dr. Mann. This lends itself beautifully to squad-based gameplay with the user able to control in realtime which character they control (more on this in a minute). To do justice to both those times when the story develops more deliberately as well as those when split-second action dominates, we see an Action/RTS hybrid.

The conclusion, as you probably guessed, is yes … and no doubt when the movie comes outs, a Y:The Last Man game will become a reality. Let’s just hope that whoever designs it puts as much passion into it as the comic creators have.

(And yeah, while Mario can shoot fireballs, no way he beats Yorick … the plague would have taken our favorite video game plumber out, too. Last Man and all …)

Although there has been a good deal of combat in Y, I don’t think of it as an action series. I think any video game would focus far too much on combat and not enough on the social import (gender issues) and character sketching (how would you do Safe Word?) that make up the heart of Y?

If the game ended up being Yorick wandering through River City throwing knives and broken bottles at one-breasted Amazons, I’d firebomb someone.
