Wood and Martin to tackle Tank Girl at IDW

January 8th, 2007
Author Kevin Melrose

On his blog, Ashley Wood announces he’ll be illustrating a new Tank Girl series for IDW Publishing, written by the character’s co-creator, Alan Martin. It’s set to launch in May.

“So if there ever was going to be a new Tank Girl series, I would want Jaime Hewlett doing the artwork and Alan Martin writing it… right…,” Wood writes. “Well if Jaime cant draw it, then damn it, I’m putting my hand up… anddddd I am.”

He notes that Tank Girl will have a new look, something Martin addresses in a message:

We were concerned that she didn’t make her re-appearance in the same, tired old clothes that she bowed out in some twelve years ago. What was alternative, upsetting, anarchic, and just plain odd-ball back then has since become common place. Mainstream media smothers us daily with punky chic, and modern day babies can be seen sporting spikey hairdos and Travis Bickle T-shirts. The uniform of the cultural revolutionary has been sold to The Man.

So how to rebel? How give the finger to the fashion fascists?
Normal is the only way ahead.

Dress like a high school teacher from the mid-eighties, or pick clothes from your boring aunty’s wardrobe.

The only way left to rebel is to dress like you’re not rebelling.

Will IDW be publishing a version in Klingon as well?

  4. Jesse Says:

Now everyone understands why I used to show up at metal shows wearing a paisley Hawaiian-type shirt and khakis.

Hmmm… this might be my first $3.99/22 page comic (if those are in fact the price and page count).

If that’s your attitude, you’ve already been assimilated.

Please get Hewlett to do a cover, please get Hewlett to do a cover…

    Man, I love Jamie Hewlett.

  8. Gordon Says:

It doesn’t seem like it’d really be Tank Girl if it’s not Jamie Hewlett…

I do like the new look, though. Normal is the new weird.

  9. John Says:

    Oh hell yeah!
I love me some good ole’ fashioned Tank Girl irreverence!!
I love Ashley Wodd’s stuff but never would have even concieved him doing Tank, bet it’s going to be pretty sick!

If they’d let me I’d have every IDW book published in Klingon.

  11. Reliant Says:

I likey this! The thing that bothered me about the original Tank Girl was that she did look too much like girls I actually knew…

  12. booksforlunch Says:

    Wow, sounds great !
But I didn´t see any information if it´s a limited or an ongoing series.
Any info on this ? Anyone ?

i am excited…i LOVE tank girl, shes like…my role model since i was a kid…and i’ve read all of the comics, so much, its like shes my best friend how well i know her. and to see her in a business suit, it breaks my heart a little. she lives in the fuckin outback. how is a business suit practical?! it made me really cry. but i’ll still read her, every issue. but its disappointing cause thats just not her. it doesnt matter what everyones wearing nowadays. people wear everything now. anything thats ever been viewed as rebelious or anti fashion, is FASHION now, but i dont think that would faze her in any way, cause shes TANK GIRL. she lives in her own world. and does her own thing. and i dont think she would ever be seen riding her tank with her kangaroo lover in a stuffy uncomfortable business suit. but thats just my opinion. =(

  14. Drake Says:

Ashley Wood? *whine* I LOVE TANK GIRL, but I hate Ashley Wood’s art crap ever since I was tricked into buying Pop Bot! Couldn’t IDW have picked someone with better sense of storytelling, and not muddy ambiguous dreamscapes? What is Tank Girl WW2 bomber jet nose art? I disapprove, and so do the Kangaroos.

  15. Ryall Says:

Hey, booksforlunch, we’re starting with a 4-issue miniseries. Each issue’s gonna have multiple stories in it, though.

  16. god is a bunny Says:

I loved tank girl, been a fan way before she hit the states. I like the art style, but it is not tank girl.

  17. Jonas Says:

uh…i think i saw a movie called tank girl once. is this the same tank girl?? If it is i hope its nothing like the movie i saw. I needed years of therapy after that crapfest.

  18. mike weird Says:

great. you started out ripping off jamie hewlett and jamie hernandez (horribly), and now you come full circle. i hope it has lots of zombies vs robots (not), and you finally try to learn how to draw a comics page with emphasis on storytelling.

  19. booksforlunch Says:

Thank you for the reply, Ryall.
I´ll definatly tell my comicshop to put it on my pull list.
And as for the suit, I don´t think that it does matter this much WHAT she wears, as long as she has the right ATTITUDE. Which is not unlikely, considering it has the original writer.

  20. Randy Says:

I’m all over this. I can’t wait to read it, no matter the cost, it’s worth it.

  21. lalebuny Says:

i was super critical of the idea as well but ive gotten used to it i think,
for those of you upset about her in a “business suit”, its not really the case, check out the thumbnails of pages on ashely wood’s site, and as for his style, its actually got the ruggedness of the old tank girl in it with all its splashy paint work, im looking forward to it.
