Digital colourist and pin-up artist Drew Posada passed away recently due to complications from a pancreatitis. He was 37. Drew was best known as one of the pioneering digital colorists, working for several Image studios including Wildstorm, Top Cow, Avalon and others during the mid to late 1990s. He later left comic books to pursue a career as a pin-up artist.
Friend and writer Joe Vitzen reported his passing on his Blog:
I have been friends with Drew since January of 2005 when I approached him for a commission piece. Over the past year or so, Drew had become like a mentor, brother and therapist for me. Someone who always took the time out to listen and help with a problem if he could. Drew is the single reason why I even became interested in comic coloring in the first place.
Condolences from Newsarama to family and loved ones.

Drew was immensely, ridiculously talented. He was a pioneer and generous beyond belief with his knowledge and ability to motivate others.
I wrote a brief rememberance here.

Both my brother and I have chronic pancreatitis; it can be a brutal disease at times, and at other times you almost forget you have it. I’m glad he was able to find success is his field. I’m saddened to hear of his passing and pass my condolences on his family and friends.

This is so sad, he was so young and so talented, I cherish those Wicked covers he did for Image, they just seem to pop right out the paper to jump at you.

Rob…is there a PUBLIC place we can read what you wrote?

I haven’t seen Drew in a long time but i had the honor of being his friend as well as worked with him for a couple of years back in the early 90’s. He inspired me in so many ways. I always appreciated his skills but mostly his honesty and integrity. He always pushed me to do my own thing, the foundation of Drew.
I was blessed to have had the chance to know Drew. His presence will certainly be missed in the art world.
My heart goes out to his family, his lady Dawn and his brother Alex.
He was a rightous brutha and I will carry his spirit through the rest of my journey.

Very sadly Drew passed away late Thursday night January 04, 2007. The diagnosis was acute pancreatitis. His brother Alex, Alexs’ wife Francine, and I were by his side.
Alex, I, and the rest of Drews family would like to thank everyone for their support during this time. Drew absolutely was so full of like that it is difficult to imagine it without him. Your kind words, thoughts, and prayers truely help us get through these days and nights. If it is possible for Drew to take a break and rest, know that he is doing so peacefully.
Thank you…Thank you very much.

Wow, man. Here I am, July ‘08 and i’m just now finding this out. It’s crazy, because i’ve been trying to break into comics for the longest, and I exchanged a few emails with Drew where he was greatly encouraging to me.
(Those who read it might recall an issue of the Tenth by Tony Daniels where I wrote a letter– under the same pen name– praising “whoever the colorist was” for doing such a great coloring job. Issue #10 I think, or thereabouts.) That was when I became a fan. I’ve yet to see someone who can do the things with digital colors that Drew could. He told me he admired the legends, people like Sorayama and Olivia. Me being an aspiring writer who wants to be as good as the greats, people like Ellis and Moore, I could definitely relate.
Everything these people are saying is true. The guy didn’t know me from Adam, and he practically did everything he could to help me out. He even said he might consider helping me out with the colors for the cover to my submission to Image. Such a cool guy. Truly a loss. I’m saddened as if I knew the guy personally. (wish I did, for that matter.)
I hoped to meet him one day. Maybe hang out, have a beer. My condolensces, definitely.

Drew painted several commissions for me of my girlfriend and of several vintage P-47 Thunderbolt airplanes for me. I would love to contact his twin brother to see if he would paint several more commissions. Does anyone know how to contact Alex?
