Wyatt Wingfoot and Johnny Storm, by Paul Pope

On his blog, Paul Pope offers a look at a panel from his contribution to Fantastic Four #543, the big 45th anniversary issue. I like the panel, which shows a teen-age Wyatt Wingfoot helping young Johnny Storm with his racer. But I love Pope’s description of Jack Kirby-designed vehicles:

I always loved those crazy machines Kirby would invent for his stories — the Forever People had their Super-Cycle and The Fantastic Four had their Fantasti-Car. Kirby’s idea of a car was like someone taking one of those saucer-cupped seats from the sit-and-spin Mad Hatter ride at Disney World, re-casting it in shining chrome, painting lightning bolts on the sides, and sticking giant wheels and a massive jet-engine beneath the frame.

Fantastic Four #543 is set for a Jan. 31 release.

The fact that Marvel still even acknowledges Wyatt Wingfoot these days shocks me (in a good way, I love the character). The only way this Pope piece could have been better (and it’s great) is if they were tinkering with the Spidey-Mobile (but I think Heath or maybe Romita Sr. designed it, not Kirby).

Paul Pope is the bomb! BUT where’s the creator owned content. I don’t care about the franchise books.
