Behind the scenes, kind of.

Marvel’s Spy In The House of M snuck into the Marvel planning summit at the end of last year, and brings you all the inside gossip:

[T]his, my friends is the coolest place to be today. The Marvel creative retreats, or summits if you will, are where the Marvel editorial staff and a handful of creators come together to hash out the plans for the Marvel U. (not to mention the Ultimate U. and beyond) for the next year-plus.

Wait, did I say “gossip”? I meant “hype machinery”:

A wave of wild enthusiasm has swept over the room as an idea being hashed out has found an excellent direction. It’s full of twists, reveals and some big emotional moments… Joe Q. was out of the room for the birth of the idea. Loeb leads the charge to explain and pitch it to the EIC. Did it work? You betcha, and he answers back with another twist to the idea that everyone digs. There’s a real, tangible creative energy here. And yup, it’s remarked that Bendis left too early. Sucka!

Dan Slott pitched another tweak. Brevoort, in a moment of faux rage, pretended to break his mini Poland Spring water bottle and stab Dan. Laughter echoes through the room.

Associate Editor for the trades department, Jen Grunwald texts Bendis about the developments. His reaction? “Argh”

There’s weird blog formatting going on, so read the first entry and move forward with the “Next” button on the top right of the panel.

WOW! Pasty, chubby white guys sitting in a fluorescent-lit conference room! The excitement is PALPABLE!

The Marvel blogs are problematic. Sometimes entries disappear and sometimes they’re simply out of order.

But Agent M and Brevoort’s blogs are always enjoyable.

I didn’t expect any kind of reveal from the summit “coverage”, but I did find the way the summit worked to be interesting, personally. I have to admit that while I understand that the point of the summit was for writers to brainstorm, I’m surprised that there aren’t any artists (besides Quesada) present to brainstorm visuals, too. Seems like a natural fit for a publisher that works in such a visual medium.

  3. Tim O'Shea Says:

What are the odds that Loeb is the next Marvel EIC (not that I expect a transition any time soon…)

  4. Mel Valentin Says:

Wow, I can’t even begin to describe how uninteresting the “gossip” about the Marvel summit(s) is (or are). Marvel could save that entry and just re-use it the next time they have a summit (more often than not, Joe Q’s comments on Fridays fit into the same mold).
