Live-action Madman movie moves forward

Madman #1

Variety reports that Dimension Films is moving forward with a live-action adaptation of Mike Allred’s Madman, hiring George Huang (Swimming With Sharks) to direct a script he’ll write with the comic’s creator.

Robert Rodriguez and Elizabeth Avellan will produce the movie through their Troublemaker Studios.

The Variety piece doesn’t have much by way of new information. In May 2004, Allred told Newsarama that Huang would be writing the script based on an outline by Allred and Rodriguez, but with Rodriguez directing.

Allred’s offbeat creation is a man who’s killed in a car accident, only to be reanimated by a mad scientist, Dr. Egon Boiffard, and named Frank Einstein (after Frank Sinatra and Albert Einstein).
Madman, sans costume, debuted in the 1990 Caliber Press one-shot, Creatures of the Id, then reappeared later that year in the four-issue Grafik Muzik. He finally donned the familiar costume in his eponymous 1992 Tundra miniseries. In 1994, Allred moved Madman to Dark Horse, where the series ran until 2000.

To coincide with the movie, Allred plans to release a new series, Madman Atomic Comics, through Image.
