Warner Bros. buys stake in UK game publisher

Warner Bros. Entertainment announced today that it will pay an estimated $87 million for a 10 percent stake in UK video game publisher SCi Entertainment Group, whose Eidos Interactive division has released games such as Tomb Raider and Hitman.

Warner Bros., part of Time Warner, is, of course, the parent company of DC Comics. As part of this deal, SCi has been granted licenses to develop games based on the comic-book version of Batman, Looney Tunes, some Hanna-Barbera titles, and TV shows such as Legion of Super Heroes, Loonatics Unleashed and The O.C.

Eidos also struck a distribution deal with Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group to provide warehousing, merchandising and media-buying services in the United States.

Update: In the comments, Rich Johnston brings up something I had forgotten: Eidos has an equity stake in Top Cow, which gives the publisher access to the company’s video-game properties. (Top Cow has published a series based on Tomb Raider.) There’s no word yet whether this new deal with Warner Bros. will affect that arrangement.

Don’t Eidos own half of Top Cow?

  2. Kevin Melrose Says:

Ah, that’s right; there is an Eidos-Top Cow connection. But is it half? I’m thinking it’s around 10 percent or so.

Just checked. Originally 10%, then increased to 26%.
