Death of a party came as no surprise.

Colorist David Baron makes a cryptic post on the YMB boards:

With “In This World” by Moby from his album titled 18 playing randomly on iTunes, I colored a death of a Super Hero. For spoiler reasons I can not tell you who or what book or even what company it was for. But I can tell you I thought about the entire life of this character. How the character grew up. What the character ate. What the character loved.

I find it really interesting the bond an artist can have with a fictional character, even one that the artist did not create. Even if you know the character will come back, like in the “Death of Superman”, it is still amazing how one, if not the world can feel.

Just a thought.

Later, he offers some more hints as to who the soon-to-die character may be:

[T]o fuel the fan boy fantasy, I am DC exclusive (which means I can work for DC, Vertigo, WildStorm and anything else Warner Bro. owned).

Needless plug for my books, my current list of projects are:

Stormwatch: PHD
A Man Called Kev
JSACLA
JLACLA
52
Batman: Confidential

And if you read those books, you know that I deal with death a lot. So mainly, this post was really about “Feelings”.

I think I will go back and see all the hero/villians I have helped kill off in the past. Most of them I am sure are not that high profile, but there have been some notables. Again, it was just a thought I wanted to share.

My bet…? John Henry Irons dying in 52. I hope I’m wrong, though…

  1. Palladin Says:

My gut feeling has been that Irons will not make it after 52.

  2. Squashua Says:

That terrible Shaq movie did him in years ago; this would be a service.

  3. Tom Bondurant Says:

If it’s a 52 character, I’m thinking Starfire. The last Superman/Batman seemed to suggest that she had passed away.

  4. Mark Fossen Says:

Well, assuming he’s not coloring too far ahead on 52 we know that the Question’s not long for the world.

Irons and Kory may bite it, but I would think that Vic Sage’s number is being called first.

  5. Duncan Falconer Says:

The Question seems almost too obvious, ya kno? I wouldn’t have wanted John Henry to bite it before 52, but after slogging through what must be 100+ pages of the most unutterably, relentlessly dull, posture-ridden superheroing I’ve had the terrible misfortune to read since I was 12 or so, it’d be a blessed relief. And his niece, and her tedium-ridden team, while we’re at it. The rest of 52 is looking up, though.

  6. Graeme McMillan Says:

That’s why I think he’s going to die - To make some kind of grand sacrifice that’ll show his niece what it “means to be a hero”, and also to expose Luthor as a villain and get him arrested, leading to the court case that opened the Superman OYL storyline.

  7. John Zito Says:

Didn’t Black Canary say something about owing IVO for Steel and Vibe in JLA yesterday?

Wonder Woman also had a cryptic line about Animal Man earlier in the JLA series too.

  8. KHuxford Says:

John Zito: there was a Steel in JLDetroit that was killed by Ivo’s bots, like Vibe.
Mark Fossen: you missed the Perfect Physician saying he has a cure for cancer and having been at Nanda Parbat so recently? There’s still hope for Vic Sage.

I say Ralph. Who else has something he ate as part of his very obvious history?

  9. Alex Hopkinson Says:

I reckon that whoever dies will be killed by those Chinese Bombs. Anyway, movin’ on…

  10. Parker Says:

But then who is the Killer For Your Love?

  11. Graeme McMillan Says:

Parker! Good morning, lethargy. Drink Pepsi - It’s good for energy.

  12. Squashua Says:

I was sure someone else would have brought up the Animal Man reference in JLofA #1 by now.

  13. Augie De Blieck Jr. Says:

If it’s DC, then it’s gotta be a black, female, or gay character, right? That’s what I’ve learned on the blogosphere. Bonus points if they end up stuffed into a household appliance first.

  14. Dan Coyle: No Turning Back Says:

It’s entirely possible Buddy came back home and just didn’t tell anyone.
