Well, both the Knights of the Round Table and the Jedi Knights served governments (Arthur's kingdom and the Republic), right? The Jedi were definitely an arm of the Republic, which apparently didn't have its own military before Palpatine came along.

Like the GLC, though, they tend to enforce a relatively nebulous moral code and the "greater good," not specific laws. I think that works best for storytelling purposes, although I guess you can lay a police-style framework over the GLC to make it more accessible to readers.

Wouldn't you say that the silver age GL Corps had more in common with the Jedi Knights than the Knights of the Round Table, with the Jedi Masters very similar to the Guardians?

In the current incarnation, the GL Corps is patterned after a police force, which makes a lot of sense to me.

Personally, I always saw the Corps less as a traditional police force and more as something akin to the Knights of the Round Table. Rather than enforcing the rules of a specific government, they're out there to support a moral code. It may not be the best example, but I think the Corps works better when viewed in vague yet semi-mythical terms.

The Corps is one of those concepts that's tremendously viable and logical on first glance and makes increasingly less sense the more you think about it.

This is why, I think, I prefer Green Lantern stories which use the Corps as a loose framework to do general space opera, science fiction and superhero stories without getting too deep into the minutiae of the organization.

Really, this article -- which is fun, by the way -- only begins to touch on all the problems posed by the concept. To the "it really doesn't make sense for Green Lanterns to have a day job" argument, I would add that if they're going to continue to characterize them as policemen/women, then they really shouldn't have secret identities either, because that kind of screws up the whole notion of accountability to the public.

One thing about Kyle -- like Alan Scott before him, he didn't have all these potential conflicts of interest. I imagine that might have been one attractive part of destroying the GL Corps.

Hey, don't knock Kyle. He's better than Peter Parker. At least Kyle isn't neurotic to the point of excess. They did go a bit overboard in getting rid of the Corps, though. Or rather, DC sat on their hands too long and should have let Kyle start rebuilding it rather than waiting for Rebirth so that Hal and Guy got thrown back in the mix.

My problem with the Corps is that since the early '90s, there's generally always been three or four human GLs operating simultaneously while every other planet got one at a time. It made it look like Earth was getting special treatment.

Yeah, I hated the Emerald Twilight more because it killed off the GLC than removing Hal Jordan. I could have easily been able to accept a new GL, as long as the GLC was intact.

But the way they went about it, destroying Hal was just lame.

Plus, Green Lantern is not a sex-specific name, I would've loved to have seen a new human female GL. Instead...white dude who acted vaguely like Peter Parker. Boring.

Still want a female human GL.
