Whatever happened to ol’ whatsisname?

Millarworld wants to redeem their favorite characters:

“I was thinking a bit last night about comic characters that were great concepts that never realized their potential. One in particular: Mondo. When I first read some of the promo materials for Generation X, I thought it was a silly idea for a character. But then I saw how well he was used in the AoA Generation Next. He was powerful, visually interesting, and just a fun character. I always wished he had been better used in the Generation X series, although that series as a whole had a lot of wasted potential (remember Penance?). Any other characters you thought were misused? Discuss!”

Bizarrely, characters like Cable, Iron Fist and Gambit get mentioned. How can someone like Gambit be misused? Was there some potential there that I missed or something? But, luckily, they’re not the only B-listers getting mentioned:

“Hello?!? Five words – DEVIL DINOSAUR AND MOON BOY!”

“Scott Pilgrim. 100+ YEARS OF COMICS, AND ONLY 3 SCOTT PILGRIM BOOKS?!”

“That guy on page 7 of Fantastic Four #259.”

“He was soooo awesome. I’ve been writing fanfic about that guy for years.”

Hey, I never claimed to be contemporary.

  3. Dan Coyle: No Turning Back Says:

John Layman’s Gambit ongoing was the only decent use of the character in his 16 year history.

Iron Fist- well, everybody loves the Fist, but nobody knows how to keep the Fist in comic stores for more than a year.

    Cable- No.

  4. Matthew E Says:

I liked Blue Devil a lot better as a movie-industry weirdness magnet than I do now that he’s supernatural muscle.

  5. John Zito Says:

President Lex Luthor was the most underutilized character in the last ten years of comics.

  6. Dan Coyle: No Turning Back Says:

Except for that issue of Plastic Man. That issue was hilarious.
