52: Only works when it’s not a Marvel book, apparently.

The Bendis Board considers the possibilty – as raised in this week’s Lying In The Gutters – of a Marvel version of 52:

“Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha, NO.”

“It would still only come out once a month and take 52 years to complete….”

“I think both companies will see diminishing returns from these weekly series. 52 definately had a leg up because it was riding the Infinite Crisis wave. I collect 52 (as do alot of people here) and judging by the messages related to it, not too many people are totally thrilled with it but still collect it because they have made it this far in the story. I think there will be alot more hesitancy to jump on the weekly bandwagon the next time (especially if Marvel tries to price it in the $3 range).”

“52 is just starting to have a lot of shit I don’t care about. Plus Black Adam was much cooler single.”

That’s right, fans. 52 sucks because Black Adam has a girlfriend. Meanwhile, one poster puts the reaction from the BenBo into three familiar words:

“Worst idea EVER.”

Wouldn’t that be 52 months to complete? Maybe my math is just off a bit.

  2. Matt Says:

I love 52 and look forward to it each week. I AM totally thrilled by it! I’m sure what each reader brings to it, especially in terms of understanding the history of the DC Universe and its characters, has a lot to do with their interpretation. I think a lot of the lukewarm reaction will change one way or another for lots of readers when all the buildup starts paying off with more storyline resolutions. I would definitely pick up a weekly Marvel book, if it could stay on time (people said DC couldn’t do it, either), and I’m sure most Marvel fans will buy it as well, at least until they can tell if it’s for them or not.

  3. Matthew E Says:

I like 52. I’m not sure how good it is, overall; I probably like it least of all the comics I get. But I’m going to stick with it not because of my investment in the series so far but because it’s such an odd little artifact that I’m curious to see where the experiment is going to go. If DC does another weekly series after this I’m probably not going to get it unless the premise is one that really grabs me.

  4. Thomas Says:

Marvel could do a succesful weekly series, if they’re willing to commit three or four top-tier writers, a master storyteller, upwards of eighteen pencillers, double that for inkers, and Turner on covers all for one book.

WILL they? I guess we will find out.

  5. Morrison Says:

We’re probably never going to see something on 52′s scale again. When DC or Marvel try a weekly again, they will ignore everything that makes 52 work…

  6. John Zito Says:

If someone were to try the comic-in-real-time experiment again it’d have a hard time not appearing as a gimmick.

  7. Tuckenie Says:

I LIKE Black Adam being married. I’d buy a weekly comic of just the Black Marvel Family. Marvel comics pulling off a weekly? I really hope not. It wouldn’t work for what they try to do.

  8. Hatchet9x Says:

If Marvel tried a weekly series I think it’d be interesting if they had it set at the emergence of the heroes (for example, the first public appearances of the Fantastic Four, the return of Captain America, etc.) and set primarily through the perspective of a street level character. It’d be criticized as being too close to ‘Marvels’ but that’s the approach I’d like to see.
