Simone: Superheroes are weird. That’s why I like ‘em.

Over at The Engine, Gail Simone is talking about her writing, and answers the question on Warren Ellis’s lips: Why superheroes?:

I have a couple things I do hope to write that are mine and have no superpeople, and I’ve had a couple near misses. I’ve been asked to do Vertigo things (including Swamp Thing, whom I turned into a businessman, Mr. S. Thing) but for one reason or another it hasn’t happened yet. I have an idea that I really want to do, but I don’t want it to be made to fit any particular marketing model so that didn’t work out at V-go yet. It’s been close. Night Nurse was non-super but was lamentably cancelled a-borning. So, there have been a few close calls, but on stuff I create I want it to come out as intended, and if I have to wait a bit to make it happen, so be it. It’s probably different for Warren P. Ellis but in general, if I discuss ten projects, it’s the superhero one that will get greenlighted… I don’t really know why this is, but DC and Wildstorm have given me a disturbing amount of freedom in the books I write for them. I think Atom is quite unbridled, and Secret Six even more so. Wildstorm has been quite remarkable in allowing me to write things that interest me with almost no brakes to slow down the train, as it were.

Great response to a passive agressive question that didn’t deserve one.

  2. Dave O'Neill Says:

Can’t wait to see John Byrne and the old school nuts raking her over the coals for not “loving the genre” the way they do.

  3. Jer Says:

After reading that I realized that what I really want is to see Gail Simone do a Doom Patrol book. I never knew that I wanted that before, but now I do.

Never saw John Byrne complaining about non-super-hero comics. He DOES complain a lot about super-hero comics that are twisted to become other genres by writers who are unable to work in the genres they would like to.

And I’ve never seen he saying anything but praise for Gail Simone’s work.

You may not like John Byrne’s opinions, but please don’t accuse him of doing something he never did.

    Best,
    Hunter (Pedro Bouça)
