Millarworld asks: “How can you convert the great unwashed?“:
“A funny thing happened Saturday went into the LCS to pick up a few bits and pieces. Since the missus was with me she braved the smell and the undersexed patrons (well, I assume they were patrons. They were 9 of them all crowded round playing a CGG) and came in with me. Now, this is where it starts getting a little odd. I was having a quick browse, when she spots one of Runaways trades (the latest one, I think), picks it up, reads the back and proclaims that she wants to read it. The odd thing being that out of the varying genres, I buy she’s never shown any interest in reading them whatsoever. Actually, scratch that, she does want to read Pride of Baghdad since I told her what it was about. I think it’s the lions that sold it to her, to be honest. So now I’m about 14 quid lighter after buying her the first 3 volumes of Runaways. I frankly have no idea what happened. One minute she’s someone who reads books without pictures (I’d heard they existed) the next she’s been converted by Runaways. So… has anyone come across this before? Someone who has never read funny books and, without being prompted, picks something up and says ‘I want to read this’? What was it and did it lead to anything else?”
“i worked with some middle aged woman at a call center, and she got bored one day and asked me for something to read(i always bring in a few tpbs), so i let her borrow Y: the last man……she LOVED em, then she read, DEMO, Pride of Baghdad(she loved this as well, she let her friend borrow them who then let her military friends borrow it and everyone said it was beautiful, only took me like a week and half to get it back, Mystery Play(didnt like it), Seaguy(didnt like it), and We3. Now shes reading transmetropolitan and i hafta go back to that job just to give her more issues even thou i no longer work there.”
Note the common thread in those two events. It’s worth pointing out that my wife, not entirely known for her comic reading habits, is addicted to almost everything BKV writes, so obviously he’s putting out four color pheromones or something, the sneaky kid. Meanwhile, not everyone has the comic love:
“My girlfriend criticizes the covers of the stuff I buy most weeks. But on the other hand, she likes Roman Dirge, so what the [expletive deleted to protect the innocent] does she know.”

I gave my brother the first 3 Runaways trades for his birthday last week. The next day he emails me and says his girlfriend wants to read them when he’s done. This girl is the farthest thing from a comics reader I can imagine. Go BKV!!!

BKV is crack for everyone. He’s how I got a few of my guy friends to read comic books. My one friend went from Y The Last Man to reading 52. He’s a total fanboy now. He calls me and asks me if I’ve read a particular issue of X-Men or whatever and I always have to tell him I get my comics mailed to me monthly.
And for the record the reason the proverbial she didn’t like Seaguy is because Seaguy was pure unadulterated crap.

No, Seaguy was brilliant, but I wouldn’t give it to those uninitiated to comics or Grant Morrison.

I’m a huge fan of Morrison and Seaguy was still crap.

My sister HATES comics. I mean, she really, really HATES them. I loaned my first couple Y The Last Man trades to her husband and next thing I know my sister is basically banging down my door to see if I had any more of the trades…

Seaguy was a lot of fun but god, that’s the WORST Morrison title you could give a newcomer.

For once, gorky and i agree.

I think this says a lot about how hard it is for non-fans to get their hands on comics. For any other type of book, there is a chance that someone spots it in a book store and impulse buys it to try it out. for comics, you have to go hunting for a speciality shop and already know what you want. Where is the room for someone to discover comics on their own in that?
