Save the cheerleader, save the network

Entertainment Weekly devotes the cover of this week’s issue to NBC’s Heroes, saying that the show is “proof positive that what was once considered cult pop is now mainstream, thanks to a decade defined by the Spider-Man and Harry Potter film sagas, to say nothing of Lost.”

Some people have commented that Heroes deals with concepts and themes seen elsewhere, in the works of George R.R. Martin, Salman Rushdie and J. Michael Straczynski. Apparently, “some people” includes Straczynski and Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof:

[Heroes creator Tim Kring] consulted an inner circle of industry friends, like Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof. ”The first thing that hit me when I heard the idea was, ‘F—. I wish I had thought of that,”’ says Lindelof. ”What was so surprising was how simple the concept was, yet it was built upon a grander theme: the wish-fulfillment of ordinary people suddenly realizing they were meant for something much greater.” However, Lindelof suggested that Kring might want to check out the similarly themed comic book Rising Stars by J. Michael Straczynski, who also created Babylon 5. So Kring picked up a copy, read the jacket summary, and put it right back down: ”I was like, ‘This is the same idea! I’m not reading this!”’ For his part, Straczynski says he’s not ruffled: ”Everybody in comics…looks to what came before and builds upon it,” says the writer, who’s now — in a circuitous turn of events — shopping a Rising Stars TV series with director Sam Raimi. And what if the networks say, ”Sounds too much like Heroes”? ”Well, there’s always seppuku,” jokes Straczynski.

EW also talks with cast members and co-executive producer Jeph Loeb. Warning: There are spoilers buried within the article.

And JMS should know, since the finale of RS is a complete rip on “What If Spider-Man had Kept his Cosmic Powers?”

  2. Morrison Says:

It’s a good show. The marketing of “Save the Cheerleader, Save the World” was genius…

Of course there are spoilers in the article, Entertainment Weekly doesn’t know how to report on anything without telling its readers every major plot point and surprise before it’s released or aired. It’s one of the hideous things about the magazine.

If you actually want to watch something be it TV show or movie, never read any articles in EW about it. Usually, the reviews are pretty safe but the feature articles always spoil everything, everytime. It’s a real shitty way to do business.

    It’s a pretty good show.

The funny thing is that I always get the marketing line mixed up in my head until it becomes: “Save the princess, save the world”.

Then I remind myself that that’s just the idea behind Super Mario Bros, not Heroes.

  5. Scott Iskow Says:

Okay, I’m enjoying Heroes and everything, but am I the only one who thinks “Save the cheerleader, save the world,” has got to be the worst superteam slogan in the history of history? “Avengers assemble” it ain’t. It’s not even a “Spoon.”

Save the Cheerleader Save the Network.

This show lacks any entertainment value what so ever. I could write better stuff if I ever sobered up.

How about a show about ME? I am a very interesting person, again, when I sober up.

  7. James Maxwell Says:

Great catch phrase!!! What will the next one be?? It has been a long time since television has had a show that is truely 100% entertaining. Not over the top, and not boring as hell. Keep the pace fellas!! It’s working!

  8. Mike Miranda Says:

The best catch phrase ever on TV! You can say it to friends and co-workers and they know what you’re talking about. This was easy back when there were 3 TV stations but now with hundreds of channels, video games, the internet and DVD’s it’s amazing! So is the show.

  9. Ed Says:
