Cameron Stewart, artist on current Vertigo series The Other Side (as well as former series like Catwoman, The Invisibles, Human Target, and that great Avengers-as-Modok cover), researched The Other Side by visiting Vietnam. Wizard’s website has some of the emails he wrote during that time, forming an interesting travelogue:
I just finished the most important leg of my trip here—a tour of the Demilitarized Zone. I crawled through the claustrophobic (and unbelievably hot) Vinh Moc tunnels, a complex system of subterranean passages that some Northern Vietnamese lived in for YEARS to escape from U.S. carpet-bombing. I saw the Rockpile, the mountain that served as an American lookout and radio tower before being captured by the NVA, and huge tracts of land that are now coffee fields, but previously had been scoured by Agent Orange. I saw the Khe Sanh military base (now a museum), posed with the rusted hulk of an abandoned tank in the town of Dong Ha, and drove along part of the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Unfortunately (for me anyway, probably very fortunately for the Vietnamese people), not much in the way of military artifacts remain, but it’s still fascinating being here.
