I’m looking for classic-fit chinos and a copy of 100%

Blogger David Welsh zeroes in on a New York Times article about publishing houses turning to outlets like Anthropologie, Williams-Sonoma and Urban Outfitters, and even delis and car washes, to sell books.

In the face of shrinking sales, something apparently has to give.

“It’s a way for the book business to stay alive,” Abby Hoffman of Chronicle Books tells The Times. “Anyplace that sells merchandise is a place to sell books.”

Welsh highlights a paragraph about new clothing retailer Martin & Osa, which the newspaper reports stocks “dozens of titles” in its four stores. The retailer’s “reading list,” available on its website, includes graphic novels like Gemma Bovery by Posy Simmonds, La Perdida by Jessica Abel, Blankets by Craig Thompson, and 100% by Paul Pope.

So, Welsh wonders, is this the next frontier for graphic-novel publishers?

  1. Oliver Says:

100% was a XMas gift last year and it was awesome. Paul Pope is a master storyteller.

Also, it has an awesome cover.

  2. David Welsh Says:

Can’t you just see a stack of Scott Pilgrims at Urban Outfitters?

Thanks for finding the Martin & Osa link!
