All-Star: You can have it on time, or you can have it good.*

October 24th, 2006

Millarworld hits appropriate notes of disbelief:

“Noticed on DC’s site that All-Star Batman and Robin #5, which had previously been delayed to November 29th, has been pushed back to January 24th! Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think they managed to ship ONE issue in 2006…”

“So at this point is it even possible that there’s an explanation beyond,’I just haven’t been working on it.’ from Jim Lee or Frank Miller?”

“From the couple issues I read, that is a blessing.”

“Good Lord this is funny and pathetic all at the same time. Miller and Lee were only able to get one issue out in 2006? Hahahahahahaha, ah b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l! Sad thing is acording to Lee and DC, Lee was nearly finished All Star Batman & Robin #5 before Lee jumped onto doing Wildcats #1 and assured fandom that #5 would be out at the end of November. Now it’s been quitely pushed back to January 24/07. At this point there is honestly no excuse other then them not working on it for it being so late.”

“I’m all for things like Marvel giving Hitch time to finish Ultimates, but this is ridiculous. There comes a point when you have to go beyond saying ‘something has to give’ and decide what exactly is going to give. He should drop something so that he can concentrate on what’s important to him, and it seems that ASBetc is not what’s important to him.”

“Absolutely, you just shouldn’t commit to more than you can realistcally do. Lee has some video game stuff, the Wildstorm relaunch, ASB, and Wildcats (possibly more). ASB is going to release 1 issue in 2006 and Wildcats couldn’t even launch its first issues without almost a month of delays. At this point he needs to sit down and figure out what he can drop. Doesn’t matter if he wants to do them all, he clearly can’t keep that workload and trying to it costing the company and retailers plenty of potential sales.”

“Y’know…asking people to start investing in an ongoing project and then treating terminal lateness as a joke to your consumers will get you utterly fired from any other profession. Occasional lateness and the caused unexpected events are one thing. Regular lack of professionalism is another and sorry, I can’t think of any other way to describe it when it gets to this scale. Only take on a job you think you can manage. If it turns out you can’t, sort out the problem, take decisive action or quit… and let someone with better work ethics take over.”

“Wasn’t Wildsiderz the new Battlechasers? Would that make ASB&R the new Daredevil: Target? Or is it Daredevil: Father? Wow, all these late books with big name talent attached…who would have thought?”

“Let’s see… Daredevil: Father #2 came out 16 months after #1. Daredevil: Target #1 came out in 11/2002 and has yet to see #2 hit the stands… Scary to think that as bad as ASB&R’s delays are, they aren’t quite to that level yet…”

(* – Definition of “good” being in the eye of the beholder, you understand…)

  1. Primate Says:

Never read an issue, don’t care if it’s late, heard the series sucks.

BUT, thank GOD the paper pushers at DC are giving Morrison and Quietly the latitude to run late on All Star Superman. The best superhero bok I’m reading now. If it’s all the same to you, mr. Levitz and Mr. Didio, I’ll just wait for quality (or Quietly – HA!).

Is it just me, or are the only people who like All-Star Bats on its merits bitter comics retailers?

  3. David Horenstein Says:

Ironic that this is from Millarworld, considering the amount of delayed books that Mark Millar is working on.

I’d say the delay has effectively killed the “All-Star” lineup (though it has given us one of the greatest Superman stories ever). I doubt All-Star Wonder Woman will be a big seller and considering that they’ve brought back a ton of the Silver/Bronze age stuff and merged it with the Reboots and added Media inspired ideas, there really isn’t a purpose to the All-Star line anymore.

Hopefully, this new Earth 2 will give them a universe in which they can do their own “Ultimate” line-up.

  4. Jer Says:

Heh – All Star Superman #6 beat All-Star Batman #5 to the stands despite the fact that All-Star Superman started, what, 6 months after ASSBAR did? And its drawn by Frank Quitely, who does wonderful work, but could never be called a “fast” artist. I think that’s the most amazing part out of all of this – Lee and Miller are making Morrison and Quitely look fast by comparison.

  5. Julio Says:

playing devils advocate here, whos to say this is all Lee’s fault and not F.Miller’s?
But I guess from the writing so far, Miller’s been spending all of 5 minutes on the can writing that dreck…

i just havent seen proof that its one person’s fault and not the other, i mean Lee was doing local NY TV news interviews about the book, so obviously he was jazzed about it…I dont think he’s the one overworked, just MHO…

  6. Frank Davis Says:

The only valid complaint about ASB&R is that Miller and Lee did not tell the fans that the book is a satire.

I can wait for it because The Ultimates and Planetary have taught me that some books will be good but will take forever to appear.

  7. Morrison Says:

Well, unlike Civil War, at least ASB&R doesn’t affect any other title…

I don’t mind delays as long as I know from the start. Ultimates, Planetary, All-Star Superman… all of those I knew when I started buying them would have long delays. All-Star Batman was initially on a 6-week schedule that’s turned into a 8-month (and counting!) schedule. UNACCEPTABLE… but funny…

I enjoy it on its own merits and unironically.

  9. Julio Says:

thats because it wasnt a satire.
    thats really Frank miller.

  10. Tuckenie Says:

Must be nice to be ludicrously rich so you can work whenever you feel like it. Is Miller gonna take this long directing The Spirit?

  11. Jamie H. Says:

Funny this coming from Mark Millar. Doesn’t he work for the same company that doesn’t put out Ult. Hulk V. Wolverine?

  12. Philip Kollar Says:

“Funny this coming from Mark Millar. Doesn’t he work for the same company that doesn’t put out Ult. Hulk V. Wolverine?”

Uh… what? This came from the Millarworld boards. Not straight from Millar’s mouth. I didn’t search the thread too meticulously, but it doesn’t even look like Millar posted in it.

  13. Mark Engblom Says:

In a time when the (potential) benefits of being a comic book creator have never been better, the overall work ethic seems to have plunged to a pathetic, cartoonish new low. Selling products you clearly can’t deliver seems little more than a con game to me.
