Hartley talks Justice League, but not GA spinoff

October 20th, 2006
Author Kevin Melrose

Terry Morrow, TV writer for the Knoxville News-Sentinel, talks to actor Justin Hartley about Smallville and the future of Green Arrow, and learns the following:

1. Hartley wants to focus on his seven Smallville episodes, and not rumors of a possible Green Arrow spinoff.

2. Sometime in 2007, Smallville will, indeed, feature a Justice League assembled by Green Arrow, uniting Cyborg, Flash and Aquaman from previous seasons.

Although Hartley was cast as the Sea King in the ill-fated Mercy Reef/Aquaman pilot, Alan Ritchson will reprise his role from last season.

While the Oliver Queen character is cool. I can’t shake the feeling that this may have been what the writers had in mind for Bruce Wayne. I remember reading somewhere that upper management decided against using Bruce because of “Batman Begins” success, and didn’t want any conflict between Bruce’s origins in the film and Smallvile.

I think you’re right that Ollie is a Bruce Wayne substitute here, Skyhawk. But I don’t mind at all! Heck, Green Arrow was always an arrow-knocking stand-in for Batman. Ollie’s the best thing on the show right now.

I hope they do a spinoff, and that it fares better than the Aquaman pilot.

Hard to say. On one hand, Bruce and Clark are an obvious duo whereas Bruce and Ollie is more a “WTF?” concept so from an “icon re-imaging” point of view yes it would have made sense to bring in Bruce Wayne. But OTOH the whole point of Green Arrow in SMALLVILLE is to teach Clark Kent about the virtues of becoming a costumed crimefighter – something they couldn’t have done with Bruce Wayne unless he was Batman. And having Batman as a fully fledged character would have seriously unbalanced the show. So I think ultimately using the Green Arrow was an effective compromise.

On that point I agree. As a side note when Ollie’s penthouse was shown, it was the “Birds of Prey” set(refurbished with the lit up clockface)which also made me think of Bruce.

In the episode “Justice” when Chloe is finding the phone number impulse had called she says there’s a satelite over Wayne industries. Is this a hint the bruce may make an appearence.

Undeniably believe that which you said. Your favorite reason seemed to be on the web the easiest thing to be aware of. I say to you, I definitely get irked while people think about worries that they just don’t know about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top and also defined out the whole thing without having side-effects , people can take a signal. Will likely be back to get more. Thanks
