Class of ’45

This is a little creepy … someone on eBay is selling a copy of Steve Ditko’s high school yearbook:

1945 edition of the Johnstown, PA Spectator features Steve Ditko, future co-creator of The Amazing Spider-Man, Doctor Strange and many other memorable characters from the Marvel Age of Comics. There is a senior portrait of Ditko, along with one other possible photo (see below.) There is, unfortunately, no artwork by Ditko in the book. Ditko, as you may know does not give interviews, so published photos are very hard to come by.

The link comes from Mark Evanier, who talks about Ditko’s desire for privacy on his blog:

Ditko is a very private person who doesn’t give interviews — at least, knowingly. One somewhat slimy person in the field has phoned him a few times, caught him in a chatty mood and had a conversation…and this slimy person taped those calls and has circulated copies here and there. Ditko demands his privacy, as of course is his right, so I don’t know what he’d make of this. Probably wouldn’t like it much.

$200 seems a bit steep for a yearbook for a school you didn’t actually attend. I did a quick search on “yearbook” on eBay to see if any other famous people’s yearbooks were out there, but had no luck.

Actually, the yearbook should be interesting as I understand that some of the people in it resemble characters Ditko later created for Spider-Man, including someone who looks just like Flash Thompson, right down to the peculiar sweater he wore.
