Continuing the theme of self-hype, I want to talk a bit about my next cartoon book, MIGDAL DAVID (literally translated as “David’s Tower”).
MIGDAL DAVID is a cartoon memoir about two boys growing up in an orthodox jewish community — one living with an uncommon disability, struggling to find his place in community and religion; the other given all the advantages in life, frustrated and seeking ways out of both.
Judaic publisher Seraphic Press will publish the 150 page black and white hardcover and make it available in both bookstores and via the direct comics market in Fall/Winter 2007.
Seraphic Press Publisher, Robert Avrech says:
“Life just works out sometimes.
“When Karen and I started Seraphic Press we were determined to publish graphic novels. Only problem was, how were we ever going to find a great graphic novelist who would write and illustrate a book appropriate for our audience. Almost every graphic novel we read was filled with unbelievable profanity, sex, and extremes of violence, what the mainstream media calls ‘cutting edge’ material. “And then, about a year ago, for a Shabbos, Karen and I hosted a few boys from the Orthodox community with developmental problems. It was a deeply moving and humbling experience. A few days later, Neil, the brother of one of the boys, wrote to thank me. I wrote back a polite note and as notes flew back and forth I learned that Neil–I promise I am not making this up–was an award winning graphic artist.“An idea sprouted in my mind and I asked Neil if he would be interested in writing a graphic novel for Seraphic Press about his brother and the unique problems an Orthodox family faces when a developmental disability strikes.”

I’m beginning work on Chapter Three tonight and I believe, when done, it serve as a great testament to brotherhood, adversity in the face of tested faith and a great example of what it means to struggle against a society which treats you differently.
