On his blog and at the Drawing Board, artist Stuart Immonen comments on yesterday’s annoucement about Nextwave ending as an ongoing series:
… thanks to all for the comments of support. As a 12 issue standalone, it’s been great. I stand behind it 100%. But I’m not surprised it didn’t find a bigger audience; apart from the JLA franchise, I can’t think of a superhero-humour book that lasted longer than a year… I guess it’s too late now, but the next couple of issues get pretty damn dark in tone. I mean black.
I should also say for the record that Warren, for the sake of a joke, overstates my importance to the Nextwave recipe. As I understood the financial picture, it was the combination of our wages that made NW unsustainable in its present form. There were some reconfigurations on the table– printing from enhanced pencils, a format change, etc– but the writing was clearly on the wall. Joe Q and Marvel have been behind NW from the beginning, and have offered both W and I other work in its stead, so clearly they are happy with the effort put forth. The theme song, the Crayon Butchery issue, Joe’s personal and public stamp of approval were none of them enough to change the sales trend.
I do have ongoing work lined up. I can’t discuss it.
Thanks again! The next couple of issues have pushed the freakout meter into the red zone. Watch the skies.
Nextwave #12, the final issue of the ongoing series, is due from Marvel in January.

Very interesting that Immonen brings up shooting from “enhanced” pencils as a possible money-saving technique. They obviously know that the artwork looks better inked.
