I read into everything.

Tom Brevoort:

For myself, I have no desire to be EIC–I’m having too much fun with the nuts-and-bolts of comic book editing. But I’m also well aware that, if the position is ever offered to you, you pretty much have only two choices: you can take it, or you can get out. Because if you turn it down, you’er inevitably going to find friction with whomever sits down in the chair instead of you.

Is it wrong of me that I read so much into those relatively innocent words?

Cant tell if he is saying if he is offered it, he wouldnt take it and leave, or if they offer the position to someone else and they dont take it, and then he gets it, Tom expects that other person to quit.

I found this post a little curious as well. Not sure why though.

Well of course it’s fun to read too much into everything, but it would be silly to suppose this particular hypothetical situation had never rolled around in Brevoort’s head. He has to at least entertain the idea that this could be a decision he has to face. It’s a more germane for him to weigh these concerns than for me to wonder about what 5 books to take to my Martian biosphere. I’d say the biosphere thing is more fun to think about, but Brevoort is one of a handful of people who can play the “What would I do if I was Marvel EIC?” game with a real sense of gravitas.

    but, to speculate:
after Joe Quesada steps down on September 19th of next year, Brevoort gets the EIC gig, immediately rebranding the Marvel Adventures line “Brevoort’s Krazy Komix for Kids!” Alonso takes over the next day.

OK, now Brevoort’s blog entry has disappeared (but not the comments section). Speculate away!

  5. Mike Nicolai Says:

It’s hard not to think too much about it when so many questions are raised. Brevoort has no desire to be EIC? Why not? Has someone at Marvel turned down that job since Brevoort has been there?

Brevoort has no desire to be EIC? Why not?

Well, he specifically answers that one saying he’s “having too much fun with the nuts-and-bolts of comic book editing”.

  7. Chris Partin Says:

If Brevoort ever became EIC of Marvel that would actually make me re-consider my self imposed boycotting of all things Marvel. LOL.

My feeling on the next EIC – either Axel Alonso or Steve Wacker.

  8. Barry Says:

I kinda read it as saying there’s potential conflict with JQ, but considering they’ve worked together for 6 years, probably not.

  9. Tuckenie Says:

Considering they’ve worked together for six years, more like PROBABLY.

  10. Jer Says:

I read that as Brevoort saw people offered the position of EIC in the past who turned it down, and then saw what happened to them when the new Sherrif came to town. He’s been there long enough to be through at least two of those EIC transitions (maybe three? maybe more?) so he’s seen this kind of political fallout before.

This is, by the way, no different from the more competative places I’ve worked. In government jobs its routine to say “naw, I don’t want the responsibility” and pass over a promotion – no harm no foul, but in a competative corporate environment, you’re either moving up or you’re moving out, so I could see it being that way at Marvel – a company not known for its “Happy Family” corporate environment in the best of times.

  11. Will Says:

Boy, if there was one person I think could screw up Marvel more then Quesada has, it’s Brevoort.

I just looked at the Marvel January solits and without Astonishing shipping that month, I might not buy a single Marvel book. Just a few years ago I was buying 20+ of their titles…Really sad

  12. Ian Says:

I don’t think there is anything to this at all. His column is about how the EiC is often put upon and derided.

I think it was just a natural follow up to the topic at hand. Considering his position, he couldn’t NOT mention that.
