Comics For a New Tomorrow…Today!

October 17th, 2006
Author Neil Kleid

Tomorrow is Wednesday, folks, and the following books have been confirmed to ship from my Local Comic Book, Graphic Novel and Pog provider, Midtown Comics. Please check with your local retailer to confirm availability of new items, as not all new releases will be on sale in all areas on the same week. Suckers.

Here is what will be coming out, what I’ll buy, what I won’t and why. Along the way you might get some insight as to what I enjoy, some quick reviews and maybe a laugh or two. Enjoy!

DC COMICS

100 Bullets #77 $2.99
I’ve been meaning to read 100 BULLETS for a while now. I figure, like PREACHER and STRANGERS IN PARADISE, I’ll read it all in one big sitting – like a thick steak I can savor and digest, one bullet at a time. I like Azzarello’s writing alot and have been enjoying LOVELESS and the SGT ROCK Graphic Novel he did with Joe Kubert so I imagine I’ll enjoy this baby of his a great deal.

52 Week #24 $2.50
I stopped reading this back in Week 6. Is Spider Man still in the armor costume? Oh… wait.

Authority Vol 4 #1 Reg Cover $2.99, Arthur Adams Sketch Variant Cover $40.00, Arthur Adams Variant Cover $10.00 Believe it or not, I freaking love the AUTHORITY. Been reading it since Issue the First. Now with Grant Morrison taking the reigns I think I’ll love it even more and will probably have sex with it. Twice, if it lets me, with each variant cover.

Batman And The Mad Monk #3 $3.50
Whos’ writing this one – Dan Brown?

Batman Gotham County Line TP $17.99
“Come on, Penguin…  if we can just make it into the next county, we can escape the jurisdiction of that pointy-eared Caped Crusader…!” OKay, well it made ME laugh.

Birds Of Prey #99 $2.99
Birds Of Prey The Battle Within TP $17.99
I’m good pals with the guy who helped create the BOP concept back in the day and were he still able to read comics without slowly giggling himself into fits of nervous hysterics, I’m sure he’d love what Gail Simone has done with the title. One issue away from the century mark, folks. Don’t miss out.

Catwoman #60 $2.99
Remember when Catwoman was a villain? And Venom? And Juggernaut? I hate this “take a good villain and rehabilitate him/her” concept that started back in the nineties… even SECRET SIX still retains the sense that the Six are not your secret samaritans. Aw, hell. Anyway, Catwoman does something sexy here. Or burglarizes something. I dunno.

Checkmate #7 $2.99
It’s like QUEEN AND COUNTRY in the DC Universe. I dig me some Rucka spies.

Claw The Unconquered #5 $2.99
Anyone else out there wish this was about the Inspector Gadget villain? Doo de do de do… In-spector GA-dget!

Creeper #3 $2.99
The Creeper always seemed to be a cross between Etrigan, the Demon and the Joker to me. What’s the point?

Deadman Vol 4 #3 $2.99
I miss the Deadman who looked like a skeleton and hid in the womens’ locker rooms. This was all right… I’ll give issue 3 a try.

Desolation Jones #7 $2.99
I read the first few issues of this, and I have the collection of the first few issues on hold at my LCS so I think I’ll give it a try simply for the fact that it has to do with Hitler’s porn collection… all of which feature men with a single ball.

Exterminators #10 $2.99
I dig Tony Moore’s artwork but the concept here didn’t grab me. I’d rather go back and re-read THE FILTH unless someone can convince me to give it a try. Go.

Fables 1001 Nights Of Snowfall HC $19.99
FABLES, to me, is the hands down best Vertigo title out there. There are so many layers involved in this title that I could spend days re-reading the issues looking for more. The main title is starting to build to war between Fabletown and the Adversary’s troops but this graphic novel relates a series of short stories based upon the various characters in the Fables canon by Willingham and various artists. Recommended.

Flash The Fastest Man Alive #5 $2.99
How many times has the Flash died and come back to life now? He’s like Jesus in sneakers.

Hellblazer #225 $2.99
Never got into this book and the Keanu Reeves film put me off for good. I also always feel like I’m being hit with secondhand smoke when I pick one off the shelf.

Krypto The Super Dog #2 $2.25
This one’s by Jesse McCann who’s good with the all ages. Pick it up for your niece or nephew.

Omega Men Vol 2 #1 $2.99
You know what? I was just looking through my old comics and realized I have the OM issue in which Lobo makes his debut. Hey, Wizard Magazine? Price me! Also, I find it interesting that there are Omega titled comics from both Marvel and Dc with “men” and “flight” as the follow up.

Pride Of Baghdad HC Signed By Brian K Vaughan $19.99
Meant to pick this up last week at the Vaughan signing. Got busy – will correct that this week. Vaughan has been kicking my ass lately on RUNAWAYS and ESCAPISTS. I think I’ll like this better.

Recipe For Gertrude Vol 2 TP $9.99
1 tea, stirred lightly. A Dash of scotch. Hint of honey. Cup of grenadine. Bit of soda. Stir.

Robin #155 $2.99
“Short Pants”. I don’t have a joke here – I just like saying “short pants.”

Sandman Vol 2 #1 Special Edition $0.50
50 Cents makes this baby worth the time. I was never a SANDMAN fan but I’ve found I like everything else Gaiman writes, AMERICAN GODS topping the charts.

Shadowpact #6 $2.99
Damn you, Bill Willingham – I’ve been trying to get a RAGMAN title off the ground at Vertigo since 5756!

Showcase Presents Challengers Of The Unknown Vol 1 TP $16.99
I always put a hyphenated pause in every time I say the title of this DC team: “It’s the Challengers — OF THE UNKNOWN!”

Skye Runner #5 $2.99
I once dated a girl name Skye Runner. Lovely eyes. Bit of a drinker, though.

Superman Returns The Prequel TP $12.99
Check out the paradox in THAT title…!

Tenjho Tenge Vol 10 TP $9.99
How come when I tell people I’m not a fan of manga or anime I get treated like Public Enemy Gaijin? I mean, what the Firetruck? How come I cant like what I like? I hate you all. I’m going to go read my Harvey Porn Comics now.

Testament #11 $2.99
This is another case like 100 BULLETS – looking forward to reading it in one sitting.

Wildcats Vol 4 #1 Reg Cover $2.99, Jim Lee & Todd Mcfarlane Cover $15.00, Jim Lee Sketch Cover $50.00
Sorry – one Wildstorm reboot is enough this month.

IDW PUBLISHING

CSI Dying In The Gutters #1 (2 incentive covers)
CSI Dying In The Gutters #3 (2 covers)

I can’t believe I’m reading this. Much like I can’t believe I read Johnston’s columns. It’s like a train wreck… I cannot look away.

Mixtionary HC $9.99
This looked pretty cute, actually. Plus, I’m sure I can invent some drinking game to go with it.

Transformers Spotlight Nightbeat (3 covers)
Transformers Stormbringer #4 (3 covers)

Let’s invent Transformers names by putting two words together! “Fireguard”! “Tablebreaker”! “Glasshouse”! Also, “Nightbeat”? Ew.

Wormwood Gentleman Corpse #3 (2 covers)
Zombies #5 (2 covers)
Ah, IDW. Doing what it knows best.

IMAGE

Casanova #5 $1.99
Okay – let me say this about CASANOVA: I think the idea is fascinating. I’ve read Fraction’s interviews and backstory and seen pieces of the series bible and it’s clear it’s his baby… but I tend to wander about page 13. I jump into each issue READY FOR ACTION and the humor is top notch…. but somewhere around page 13 the exposition starts to weary me and I start to flip. Maybe I have to sit through the first chapter in one sitting? I’m trying, Fraction – you’ve almost got me… I just need to clear my head to get to the end…!

Elephantmen #1 2nd Ptg Pencil Variant Cvr $2.99
Elephantmen #4 $2.99

Beautiful art, giant elephants, excellent lettering.

Girls #18 $2.99
Nope. sorry. I have real porn.

Last Christmas #4 $2.99
Yay! We Jews win again!

Noble Causes #24 (Ongoing Series) $3.50
I read the first issue and never came back… the soap opera aspect didn’t grab me nor did the characters. I hear it’s quite good, though, and if you’re into the Fantastic Four and other spandex soaps, give it a shot.

Savage Dragon #129 $2.99
Seriously? Wow. It’s been like, since 1997.

Tabula Rasa #1 $4.99
Don’t know anything about this one - I’m a blank slate.

Task Force One #4 $3.50
For those who recall, I wrote four issues of a Shadowline book called THE INTIMIDATORS. The team over there is top notch and when I was working on the book, I got a glimpse at the TF1 pitch before Jeff Stevenson started working.  Good concept, solid action writing and Jeff’s big on doing his homework. Give this one a try, folks.

Wicked West Vol 2 Abomination & Other Tales GN $15.99
Neil Vokes is a genius. I got the chance to work with him on a short four-pager and have been pushing to do something else with him because he is That Good. If you haven’t read THE BLACK FOREST or WICKED WEST, go now and do so. Great horror comics. Great fun.

Zombee GN $12.99
By the ever-elusive Miles Gunter, writing wunderkind who resides in a small locked box in Ivan Brandon’s basement. Looks like fun – I’ll try.

MARVEL COMICS

Amazing Spider-Girl #1 (3 covers)
The book that just won’t die. It’s the Flash of the Marvel Universe.

Anita Blake Vampire Hunter Guilty Pleasures #1 (3 covers)
I could make this so dirty, if I wanted, with a well-placed semicolon.

Blade Vol 3 #2 $2.99
Notice how close this title is to Anita Blake on the list? Vampiresynergy!

Cable Deadpool #33 $2.99
It’s two characters made popular by Rob Liefield! Two for the price of one!

Civil War X-Men #4 $2.99
So I’ll say this and you can all hate me – I like CIVIL WAR. I’ve been reading all the main title issues, Front Line and the Spider-Man and Avengers titles and it’s just fun… I dont give a rat’s ass about effects, continuity, etc… I’m just enjoying it for the summer blockbuster it’s supposed to be. But I can’t get into these little spinoff titles – too much dough, too little care.

Claws #3 $3.99
“In-SPEC-tor GADG-et! Da-da-da-da-da-da-DA-DA!”

Daily Bugle November Newspaper $0.25
It’s a better deal than the Post.

Essential Marvel Horror Vol 1 TP $16.99
“This Issue: The Shooter Years!”

Exiles Vol 13 World Tour Book 2 TP $23.99
I hear this is the Marvel version of all those DC books I should be reading. One day, I suppose. It’s hard to forget it began as a Malibu Ultraverse crossover.

Ghost Rider #4 $2.99
Hey, kids – have fun by speaking the dialogue in Nicolas Cage’s raspy, world-weary grunts!

Hellstorm Son Of Satan #1 Incentive Mark Texeira Variant Cover $8.00
Hellstorm Son Of Satan #1 Reg Cover $3.99

Happy Halloween, Jesus.

Jack Kirbys Galactic Bounty Hunters #3 $2.99
I really can’t make a Kirby joke here if I still want to work in this industry, can I?

Marvel 1602 Fantastick Four #2 $3.50
Diluting the only okay to begin with Gaiman mini-series again. Venture at thy owne risk.

Marvel Adventures Avengers #6 $2.99
Marvel Adventures Avengers Vol 1 Heroes Assembled TP Digest $6.99

Jeff Parker is my secret mistress and writes a good MODOK.

Marvel Comics Encyclopedia HC $40.00
Marvel Comics Encyclopedia Limited HC Deluxe Box Set With 2 Signed Prints By Frank Cho $100.00

I got nothing.

Ms Marvel #8 $2.99
How many comics with the word “Marvel” in it are there? Someone bring back Marvel the Hoppy Bunny pronto!

Runaways Vol 2 #21 $2.99
This is one of my favorite comic books. That is all. If you’re not reading this, pick up the digests and start at the beginning for quality reading.

Sensational Spider-Man Feral HC $19.99
Isn’t Feral also a Liefield character? Uh oh.

Ultimate Fantastic Four #35 $2.99
Ultimate Fantastic Four Vol 6 Frightful TP $14.99
Ultimate Marvel Flip Magazine #18 $4.99
Ultimate Tales Flip Magazine #18 $4.99

Ultimately, I’m saving $27.96

Union Jack Vol 2 #2 $2.99
I think Union Jack is such an underused character. They need to get him away from drugs and vampires and make him more of an international hero ala Captain America…. hero for the common Britain worker.

Wolverine Origins Vol 1 Born In Blood HC $19.99
Wolverine Vol 3 #47 $2.99
Oh… are there still Wolverine comics? I hadn’t noticed.

X-Factor #12 $2.99
So, I’m not the biggest Peter David fan but I will say that I love his X-FACTOR. Always have. I also think Jamie Madrox is the one X-character with the most potential – he’s like the everyman (literally) and isn’t hung up about who or what he is… I would kill to write a Madrox story and in fact pitched an XMEN UNLIMITED story about him and the Juggernaut way back when.

X-Men First Class #2 $2.99
Jeff Parker is my secret mistress and writes a good Cyclops.

THIS IS TAKING FOREVER…. OKAY, FROM HERE ON IN I ONLY CHOOSE SELECT COMICS. WHEW.

DARK HORSE

Magnus Robot Fighter Vol 3 4000 AD HC $49.95
I dug the Valiant version of ol’ Magnus, yknow. A few years back someone asked me to come up with a revamp of Magnus for an imaginary publisher and I like what I did… I wish I could pitch that to someone.

Rex Mundi Vol 2 #2 $2.99
If you haven’t read the previous Mundi issues you’re missing out. Get on board before Johnny Depp fucks it all up.

AIT/PLANETLAR

Seven Sons GN $12.95
One day AiT and Virgin Comics will put out a book called SEVEN SONS FOR SEVEN BROTHERS. I imagine they’ll have to bring in Seven Brides to make it all happen and then I will LAUGH.

AMAZE INK/SLAVE LABOR GRAPHICS

Agnes Quill An Anthology Of Mystery GN $10.95
Cemeterians #3 $2.95
Fun With Milk And Cheese TP New Ptg $11.95
Next Exit #10 $2.95

Slave Labor Graphics, the fine purveyor of quality comics from notable creators such as Evan Dorkin, Andi Watson and more, are please to present a fine selection of comics and graphic novels for your entertainment this week. They are wonderful people, the folks at SLG, and this message is in no way tainted by the fact that they are holding my royalty check for URSA MINORS!, the action/comedy miniseries I create for them with Paul Cote and Fernando Pinto, the third issue of which ships to stores next Wednesday. No way at all. Buy More Slave Labor Graphics!

Thanks – it’s nice to be able to read a list of new comics without having to stumble over the (irrelevant, proselytizing) “bible quote of the day” over at comiclist.com.

I’m not really seeing it – “I was lost, but then I read some scripture while trying to find out what comics to buy, so now i’m found.”

  9. Kevin Huxford Says:
