Infinite Rewrites, or: Crisis on Infinite Versions of DC’s Major Crossover Series.

Author Graeme McMillan

So, what were the changes in the Infinite Crisis hardcover? Just art changes like this new final double page spread (compare to the one that saw print)? Or, perhaps a pretty major change to the conclusion?

There are several flat out hints that Earth-2 is coming back/still exists in the new ICk HC. These line changes completely change the previous meanings in the monthly issues.

1.) In ICk #5, GrannyLois is dying, trying to get Kal to realize he’s been in denial. Lois says, “With all your powers, with everything you saw and did… you still never…” Clark says, “It can’t end this way,” and Lois says, “…It’s… not… going…” and then dies.

HOWEVER, the new test has OldLois saying, “I see the truth now, Clark. A truth even Alexander didn’t see… there’s something else out there… out there…” Clark still says, “It can’t end this way,” and LL still says “…It’s… not… going…”

QUITE a significant change. Of course, this could mean “Heaven”, but I think it means Earth-2, when combined with the next examples.

2.) Also in ICk #5, the Wonder Woman of Earth-2 gives her spiel, but one line is drastically changed. “But now that I’ve left Olympus, the gods’ blessings are fading. Soon I’ll no longer exist.”

In the new version in the ICk HC, Wonder Granny says instead, “But now that I’ve left Olympus, the god’s blessings to keep me here are fading. I’m being pulled… somewhere. ”

“Somewhere”, just like Lois knowing there’s something else out there, hidden from Alex.

Now the Biggie…

3.) In IC #6, when Alex is mixing up the various Earths, Psycho Pirates makes an observation: “I can feel them. Phantom beings from the fabric of Earth-One and Earth-Two, pulled from their restful place, reborn in pain and given essence — then destroyed. Billions at a time.”

Alex replies, “I planted this gargen, Psycho Pirate. I have every right to tend to it.”

MEGA-MAJOR changes occurs in the HC, where PP says instead, “I can feel phantom beings pulled from the fabric of the Multiverse, recreated and destroyed. For some reason, Earth-Two remains vacant . Why when billions of other beings appear across the Multiverse like ghosts. Reborn… then destroyed.”

Alex’ completely changed reply is, “The anomalies of Earth-Two are not my concern. Finding the perfect Earth is.”

So, here, Earth-Two is a special case in all this merging

4.) In ICk #7, SPB is whining that he doesn’t like Earth-One. Alex replies, “This isn’t Earth-One, Superboy. It never was. And now this “unified” world, this New Earth has been altered again. There are changes within its history.”

In the HC, Alex’ words are significant;y different: “This isn’t Earth-One, Superboy. In fact, it never was. I tried to divide a New Earth. Instead, I only altered its history.”

5.) And the Biggie… When Kal-L is dying in Kara’s arms, in the comic book, Kal tells Power Girl he’ll always be there for her and now he knows what Lois was trying to say. He says, “It’s not going to end. It’s never going to end… for us…” then two wordless panels, with Kal looking up into space, then the panel where he says Lois’ name for the last time, and then he dies.

WELL….. In the ICk HC, those two wordless panels gain some dialogue from Kal. After he says, “It’s never going to end for us…” he then tells Peege, “…One day you’ll see… they’re still out there…” Then says Lois’ name and dies.

“THEY’RE still out there?!??!!!!!”

Finally, in the interview in the end, Anton Kawasaki brings up ICk #6 and “New Earth”. Geoff Johns replies: “We always knew we were going to do somethings with New EarthS. THEY’RE important to “52″. Big revelations there.” (Emphasis mine).

Earth-Two is back!

Interesting, no? Ties into a particular scene in Justice League of America #0, if nothing else, but still… That’s a fascinating set of edits going on there.

  1. Alex Hopkinson Says:

Some solid Perez work there - much much better than what we got in the original issue. The link to the original isn’t working as intended, incidently.

  2. GQ Says:

Why the hell is Catman on that two-page spread of heroes?

  3. Mark Engblom Says:

Wow! Interesting stuff! As an old fan of the Earth-2 thing, I couldn’t be more pleased that DC is leaning that way. Still, it’s a little aggrivating they couldn’t get it right in the comic book versions of Infinite Crisis. Get it together, guys!

  4. Dan Coyle Says:

….Sigh. This is why I can’t handle the DCU anymore.

    Great Perez spread, though.

  5. Rob Says:

So apparently it’s not only IC the hardcover but it’s now the IC Remix?

  6. Ron Says:

I’m not surprised about Catman being there–so’s Lobo, after all–but I *am* surprised to see that Ralph Dibny IS stretching and IS NOT in possession of the Fate helmet.

  7. David Horenstein Says:

If DC were to delay the book for months at a time, so they could make whatever changes they wanted or fix any errors, there would be posts making “this is why I can’t handle DC anymore” claims.

Damned if you you, damned if you don’t.

I don’t see the big deal. IC was rushed to the stands, this much we knew, and Dido stated that the corrections would be made on the hardcover. Apparently they’ve added extras to the storyline. So if you’ve bought the book previously, you’re getting something extra in return. If you don’t want to buy the book, no one is putting a gun to anyone’s head.

This isn’t any diffent then a director’s cut of a movie.

And, it’s far better this way, then to delay your entire line for months.

  8. Dan Coyle Says:

I wasn’t attacking the changes per se, or the lateness of the original series. I was attacking the writers’ seeming inability to LET GO.

  9. Squashua Says:

All it means is that Superboy Prime got in one last punch before his incarceration.

  10. Kyle Cowstar Says:

Lame changes. Such old timer pandering.

  11. JMC Says:

So, after I bought all 14 issues(I bought both covers for each issue)DC wants me to buy the HC to get the real complete now official story?
Well, no, I won’t buy it.

  12. Kolimar Says:

Sigh… Using Hypertime would have been much simpler and effective.

  13. Ron Says:

Clarification, although I suspect the level of caring is minimal: what surprised me about Dibny wasn’t that he was back in action as Elongated Man, but that DC would allow what seems like a significant 52 spoiler.

Then again, I’m not entirely sure I understand the market for this book. Surely everyone who cares about the makeup of the DCU bought the series–are there really that many people interested in another George Perez “who’s who” drawing?

  14. Scott Iskow Says:

Although it’s borderline cliche at this point for fans to invoke Superboy Prime punching the wall and thus altering continuity… How can a mini-series this recent be retconned already? Am I reading the Earth-2 version of Infinite Crisis?

It’s like they went back and changed the original story so that people wouldn’t later accuse them of, well, changing the original story.

  15. del gorky Says:

You would think that they could at least have gotten the script and dialogue on important plot points right the first time. I really don’t feel the need to ever read or buy Infinite Crisis again. It was what it was but really lacked the fun, impact or pleasure of Crisis on Infinite Earths. Plus there was no Losers Special for IC; too bad.

  16. Ben Tucker Says:

I love it that when someone besides the commenter gets what he wants, it’s “pandering”. Whiners.

  17. comic lad Says:

it is just a comic for chrissakes.
