Mark Siegel reports on the First Second blog that Gene Yang’s American Born Chinese has been nominated for a National Book Award by the National Book Foundation:
The National Book Foundation has just announced the nominees for this year’s prestigious NATIONAL BOOK AWARD and in the Young People’s Literature category there it is: AMERICAN BORN CHINESE by Gene Yang!
As far as I know, it’s the first time the NBA has ever nominated a graphic novel.
The complete list of nominees can be found here (scroll down to 2006).

I have it sitting on my shelf in about third in line for me read. I guess it should mov up the line.

I read it earlier this month. Thought it was great. A very polished style of art, clear story telling, good balance of humor and depth, and a masterful blending of the three storylines.
My middle-school age upstairs neighbor loved it, too.

Another comment. I can’t, off the top of my head think of a graphic novel that has been up for a more prestigious award. Can you?
And, yes, I know about Maus, but that was a special award, not a regular nominee, and that is very significant.
