Director Terry Gilliam of Monty Python and Time Bandits fame hit the streets earlier this week to promote his new movie, Tideland. He spent a lot of time chatting with people in line to see The Daily Show, even going so far as to accept phone calls from their families. Ted Lange wrote up a report for the Comedy Central blog. Gilliam credits Mad magazine co-founder Harvey Kurtzman with the idea to take it to the people:
One of the artschool kids mentioned that he went to SVA and Gilliam said that his mentor Harvey Kurtzman (cartooning legend and one of the founding fathers of MAD magazine) used to teach there. Gilliam said that Kurtzman was the reason that he was out on the street promoting his movie, “Harvey taught me how to hustle!”
