Comic recommendations done well, for a change

This sidebar to a Minneapolis-St. Paul Star-Tribune preview of this weekend’s Fallcon provides a refreshingly solid list of comic-book recommendations, broken up by age group, genre and, for the under-18 set, gender.

Sure, some of the usual suspects make an appearance — Bone for elementary readers, Strangers in Paradise as “best romance” — but Frenchy Lunning, a comic art professor at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, casts a wider net with her recommendations. She suggests Blue Monday for teen-age girls — but also Scott Pilgrim and Young Avengers. Adults are pointed to Sandman and Fables, but also Mouse Guard.

While Lunning doesn’t venture too far outside of the mainstream, she does offer a decent amount of variety.

And seeing as how I frequently make fun of those insipid “comics for girls” lists that seem to pop up every couple of weeks, I thought it would be nice to point out when someone does a good job of recommending titles for new readers.
