When we last checked in on Mary Worth and her new arch-nemesis, the anagrammatically-named Aldo Kelrast, we were hoping that Aldo’s bowl haircut and walrus mustache concealed a cunning criminal mind. We speculated about a globetrotting series of moves and countermoves, culminating in an epic Grand Guignol face-off between the two. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be.
With the help of her fellow Charterstone residents, Mary staged an “intervention” in order to send Aldo a clear message about his unwanted advances. However, instead of retreating to his bungalow for more preparations (somehow we were thinking of Bill Murray with “Mister Squirrel” in Caddyshack), Aldo turned to his old friend Johnnie Walker — and their drive home soon went horribly wrong….
Now that the Charterstone Four are alternately wracked with guilt and trying to get their stories straight, it’s all started to feel very familiar to me. A threat who strikes from within their own home base, a drastic tactic that crosses a line, and the emotional impact ballooning out of control — could this be Mary Worth‘s version of Identity Crisis?
And does this make Toby Batman?
[As always, the Comics Curmudgeon offers up-to-the-panel Mary Worth coverage.]

If they cared so much about Aldo they would have had an intervention sooner. I mean, he was old. What was he going to do, turn what’s left of his life around?
If any character in that story is Batman, it’s Mary sticking her nose in everyone’s business.

Thus the guilt, I suppose. Besides, given the pace of newspaper strips, “soon” gets kind of elastic.
Also, I figured Toby mapped to Batman because she looks like the most likely candidate for re-education.
