Ordinary heroes

Photographer Dulce Pinzón pays homage to Mexican immigrants who support their loved ones back in Mexico by working in the United States:

The principal objective of this series is to pay homage to these brave and determined men and women that somehow manage, without the help of any supernatural power, to withstand extreme conditions of labor in order to help their families and communities survive and prosper.

This project will consist of 12 color photographs of Mexican immigrants dressed in the costumes of popular American and Mexican superheroes. Each photo will picture the worker/superhero in their work environment, and will be accompanied by a short text including the worker’s name, their hometown in Mexico, the number of years they have been working in New York, and the amount of money they send to Mexico each week.

Go check it out.

I’ll be the idiot to say it: with the large amount of money that some people are sending back, it seems to make it appear they are undocumented workers that aren’t paying any taxes. A fast food delivery bike guy is sending $500/week back to Mexico? Not likely if he’s being paid in a paycheck form with taxes deducted; only seems possible if being paid under the table.

  2. Joe Lawler Says:

My guess is delivery guys make most of their money from tips. It’s been my experience that tipped employees report very few of their tips, American or otherwise.

  3. Juan Arteaga Says:

Also, plenty immigrants will willingly live in crappy conditions if that means they can send more money home. I have heard cases of immigrants in Spain where seven guys live in a very small apartment so they can send more money to their families.

    Also, Latin-nerdery:

CHAPULIN COLORADO! NO CONTABAN CON MI ASTUCIA!

Okey, that was your moment of Latin-nerdery. Nothing to see here. Move along. Move along.

It’s distrubing that Robin is a prostitute.

  5. Dean Trippe Says:

Excellent photos. It would be really cool if Americans saw the immigrant workers in the US as superheroes helping their friends and families. Absolutely wonderful idea.

Can someone making a living as a male prostitute be considered admirable by any stretch? As long as he sends money home? On the same un-PC vein, how about thieves, drug-pushers and muggers? Just as long as they don’t spend all their money in the US?

  7. eqdoktor Says:

Yea, I realize that the male prostitute was probably thrown in to provoke artificial debates. Millions of other truly worthwhile hard working people and they chose him. Just saying.
