An interesting report from Houstonvoice.com says that a Marvel spokesperson is denying that the company ever had a policy about labeling books featuring homosexual characters in the lead role as being for mature readers:
“The best way to find this out is to go to the comic book store, and you will not see a warning label on any title with gay characters,” said Jeff Klein, executive vice president of Dan Klores Communication and spokesperson for Marvel.
Earlier this year, Joe Quesada, editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics, angered gay fans and activists when he stated that no ongoing solo series starring gay characters would go out without a warning label, according to the national Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, a media watchdog group.
But Klein said those accounts were based on inaccurate reports.
“On the record, Marvel never had warning labels on comic books with gay characters, and we never will,” he said.
The article goes on to quote Joe Quesada from the Joe Fridays column where he said the policy had “faded away,” then picks up again with more from Klein on the Rawhide Kid controversy:
BUT ACCORDING TO Klein, Marvel had placed the Rawhide Kid series, which is no longer published, under its “MAX: Explicit Content” category. He said the category, which has distinctive packaging from other titles, is used for stories with adult subject matter.
Klein didn’t provide a reason why Rawhide Kid was considered a Max title during its publishing run, but said it was not due to pressure from conservative groups.
“Looking at certain aspects of the title, that specific story fell under that banner,” he said. “It’s just an overall adult labeling.”
It’s odd at this point that a Marvel spokesperson would make a statement denying that they ever had such a policy, especially since they’ve already received some press and even accolades from fans about it going away. And if the whole thing was blown out of proportion by “inaccurate reports” — reports that started shortly after the Rawhide Kid/CNN bruhaha — why are they only now denying it? And why would their editor-in-chief say it went away if it never existed in the first place?

Has Marvel ever bothered hiring a public-relations specialist? Would they even listen to said person if they did? I thought this level of rank stupidity and cluelessness went out the door with Jemas. Apparently I was wrong.

I expect that someone in the PR house just got assigned to this account, does not know jack and was still inexperienced enough to go on record, rather than saying: “I don’t know, let me get back to you on that.”

Inaccurate reports? What, like all those Joe Fridays where Quesada talked about how the policy existed even if he didn’t really see a need for it?
“Klein didn’t provide a reason why Rawhide Kid was considered a Max title during its publishing run, but said it was not due to pressure from conservative groups.”
IIRC, nobody ever said it *was*. The policy was supposed to have been formed in *response* to complaints from conservatives after the series was already published.

Maybe the Scarlet Witch wiped the policy out when she got most of the mutants.

Joe Quesada made those comments directly to me. No innacurate reporting here.

Seems to be a common idea these days—if called on something, claim it isn’t true, then further claim it never happened.

Superboy punched a wall.
Well, SOMEONE had to say it…

It’s retarded enough that they put it into an “explicit” rating just because it’s gay.

Wouldn’t it be nice if at least some private news-sites had the nerve to refer to that “lying shitbag Jeff Klein” until he apologises?
I mean, he’s not really anybody and he’s standing there telling people that black is white. I get that many people feel they have to take this from their bosses and politicans, but a Marvel PR drone?

Hmm. Just in case Mr. Klein or someone from Marvel reads these comments, I’d like to dispute your statement that Marvel had no such policy at any time. I have two emails written by Mr. Quesada dated 2/13 and 2/14 2006.

We have always been at war with East Asia.

I always thought Quesada was making the whole “policy” up as a way to deflect blame from his own self. Now there seems to be something to back up my “conspiracy theory”. Joe Q is a liar - there never was a policy, except in the brain of Joe Quesada. Now if only he would go the way of the policy…
