There’s no indication that these versions will supplant the originals, though.

That's true, but I was thinking long-term, and probably worst-case. I don't think much has been said either way about the fate of the originals.

And yeah, the syndication schedule stinks (stinks!) for me too -- 1:00 a.m. Monday mornings, mostly due to conflicts with FOX baseball. I also won't get to see "Miri" this weekend. I suspect things will get better in November.

A weekly schedule through 9/8/07, with repeats included, is up at StarTrek.com.

There's no indication that these versions will supplant the originals, though. They didn't say they wouldn't do another DVD release or even an HD-DVD release of the unretouched versions, this is just to make it a more attractive syndication package.

I went to University of Hawaii with Mike Okuda, and we were members of the Honolulu Science Fiction Society many years ago, before he left Hawaii for fame and fortune with Star Trek. Believe me, he is a tried-and-true, dyed-in-the-wool Original Series Fan from way way back. I'm one of the first generation Original Series fans myself (yeah, I'm old - sheesh, 40 years ago!). Anyway, Mike has been steeped in Star Trek since maybe his preteen years and used to publish his own fanzine - I still have copies of it buried somewhere here ... As soon as I knew Mike was involved, I decided to not worry.

I'm of two minds about the Star Trek thing.

My first reaction is to yell and scream because I don't want anything changed.

My second reaction is to cheer because Star Trek will be on a broadcast channel and I'll be able to watch it again, since I don't own the DVDs.

I'm less worried now than I was when I first read about the changes because the Okudas seem to be deeply involved and they seem to be fans of the show as much as (if not more than) employees for Paramount.

And when I saw the trailer for the new version and Kirk actually looked tan, it gave me hope for actually seeing Data look gold someday.

I am a casual Trek fan, and have been enjoying replays of the original series on G4. I'm always amazed at how good the show looks despite it's age. The special effects are classic, and I can appreciate them for what they are. They do not require great leaps of my suspension of disbelief to enjoy (I wish I could say the same for some of the acting). I think the ideal for all fans would be to have both versions availible.
