Dallas-Ft. Worth’s Quick has a brief interview with writer Brian K. Vaughan, focusing on Pride of Baghdad, his graphic novel with artist Niko Henrichon.

The Vertigo hardcover, released this week, tells the story of a pride of lions who escape from the Baghdad Zoo during an American bombing raid:

To get his story straight, Vaughan consulted U.S. soldiers, Iraqi bloggers and a rescue veterinarian who worked in Iraq. Vaughan settled on four lions – a male, two females and a cub – and he granted them the ability to speak to each other and other animals.

“I wanted to do a story about anthropomorphic animals, because it was different from what I’d done before,” Vaughan, 30, said. “And it’s something that comics had done so well before, whether it’s Uncle Scrooge or Maus.”
