Off-topic: MySpace playing big role in retail traffic

MySpace

This isn’t strictly comics-related, but considering the number of creators and retailers who use MySpace for marketing and the number of fans who use it for networking, it seems relevant: The blog TechCrunch reports on new Hitwise statistics that indicate MySpace drove more U.S. traffic to retail websites than MSN search, the third-largest search engine behind Google and Yahoo.

According to Hitwise, MySpace was the source of 2.53 percent of traffic to online retail sites. Yahoo accounted for 4.69 percent, while Google dominated with 14.93 percent.

“… The numbers go some distance towards proving that young people using social networking sites are interested in shopping through links on those sites,” TechCrunch writes. “In fact, they’re more of a force to reckon with than MSN searchers apparently.”

A little over a week ago I started a thread on the Engine with my list of comic shops and independent bookstores on MySpace. It’s about 90 shops long, now. Great for marketing.

Thanks, Jason. I’ll add that to the post.

I started up a MySpace page to network and get the word out about my books. It’s worked wonderfully! I have an “official” website as well, but it was proving difficult to find a way to get people to visit it. MySpace was the answer! And in the true spirit of MySpace, how can I not add my address?
