Reminder: Fantastic Four cartoon airs Saturday

Toon Zone talks with Marvel’s Chris Yost about the Fantastic Four animated series, which premieres Saturday at 8 p.m. Eastern on Cartoon Network:

Toon Zone: Would you say that you’re drawing inspiration primarily from the seminal Lee-Kirby run on the comic, or have other creator’s runs been taken into consideration, such as John Byrne, Mark Waid or Walt Simonson’s work?

Yost: I’m a huge comic book fan, and there’s nothing in FF lore we didn’t look at when drumming up episodes for this series. There’s a good mix of Lee/Kirby, Byrne and Waid in there, but it’s more like elements from their great runs, all thrown together into a new bag.

And I desperately wanted to do the Doom/Reed time travel fight from Walt Simonson’s run, but it made my head blow up too much.

Animated Bliss has summaries for the first four episodes.

I hadn’t heard anything about this show, I’ll have to check it out. (now if I can only remember how to program the VCR…)

Walt Simonson’s run should be collected. That Dr. Doom/Reed Richards time travel fight was genius, and just fun to read. I wore my copy out from reading it over and over again.

  2. Captain Qwert Jr Says:

It would be cool if they showed pieces of the time travel fight in every episode, and then put it all together for an episode toward the end of the it’s run.

I don’t think it would work in animation. That was something that was pretty rooted in the comics reading experience, flipping pages back and forth, etc.

Wow. Sue passes out from fright/despair in her first major scene. So much for empowering her with “Invisible Woman.”

And sadly, a 4 on Ben’s belt buckle isn’t enough. Apparently those durn cosmic rays spray painted a 4 on his chest. I wish I was kidding. (Actually the episode touched on Ben’s challenges somewhat…)

I’ve seen worse (Spidey and his Amazing Friends…) and it entertained my seven-year old target audience.
