Can't Wait For Wednesday!

Usually in Can’t Wait for Wednesday I focus on all the first issues that are coming out in a given week, but today I want to talk a bit about second issues, as several #2’s to some promising series drop this week.

If it seems like it’s a little too soon to already have another helping of the twisted Garth Ennis/Darick Robertson series The Boys, that’s probably because the second issue is coming out a mere two weeks after the first. It’s definitely not a series for everybody, and I think that releasing two issues of it in a given month could lead to rampant chaos on a global scale — dogs & cats living together, that kind of stuff — but I’ll be damned if I’m going to miss seeing what happens next. It’s kind of like Nip/Tuck … I don’t know what it says about me that I really, really like it.

Also out this week is the second Uncle Sam & the Freedom Fighters, which I never intended to like, but somehow the first issue won me over. Other deuces dropping this week include the Ultimate X-Men annual, Jack Kirby’s Galactic Bounty Hunters, Young Avengers & Runaways, and Ursa Minors.

And for anyone who ever wanted to see Rich Johnston die (you sick bastards) CSI Dying in the Gutters #1 from IDW comes out this week. He talks a bit about being dead in his latest Lying in the Gutters column.

Tom Bondurant’s Pick of the Week

I’m picking All-Star Superman #5, featuring the return of Luthor and following up on his brief appearance in issue #1. So far, this series has been exploring what might best be called a twisted Silver Age, but I am eager to see how Morrison might blend other eras’ Lexes into the old-school criminal scientist. I’d like to think a Hackman wig will make a cameo….

Lisa Fortuner’s Pick of the Week

I’m dying to get my hands on the Green Lantern Greatest Stories Ever Told trade, and the Tomar Re/Destruction of Krypton story inside. All-Star Superman #5 is definitely on my list, but I’ll probably stare for 10 or 15 minutes at Black Panther #19 deciding whether or not it’s worth buying.

Teen Titans Go! #34

Kevin Melrose’s Pick of the Week:

After a few lackluster weeks, there’s finally a comic that has me excited: Teen Titans Go! #34. Yeah, I’m a little surprised, too. But the story, which pits Kid Flash against Mas y Menos in “The Great Race,” evokes the charm and spectacle of the Silver Age competitions between Superman and The Flash without getting mired in nostalgia. You can check out a preview here.

Melissa Krause’s Pick of the Week

My pick will definitely be Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters. The first issue was an interesting start, but this one will make or break this series for me. I’m also waiting with baited breath and no small trepidation for Trials of Shazam. It’ll either be really good or really bad and I’m not yet sure which.

JK Parkin’s Pick of the Week

Solo #12 marks the end of an experiment by DC Comics to give artists the opportunity to draw whatever kinds of stories they wanted to draw (DCU-related or not). In my eyes, it was a success, but I guess the marketplace says differently, which is really a shame.
