Brevoort: A distorted reality is a necessity to be free.

Tom Brevoort’s fascinating Marvel Editor simulator blogject is apparently causing ripples out in the real world:

I received the following e-mail from Paul Jenkins today:

>The EIC is fine with the idea of having Paul Jenkins and Ramon Bachs take over EXILES, with Mike Mayhew on covers. You reach out, and are able to get everybody on board. Paul tells you that he knows next to nothing about the mutant world, but that he can see interesting stories to tell in that milieu. You’re going to have to guide him through the continuity a little bit.

I never heard of this before. What is this?

P >

I have since filled Paul in on what’s going on here. But please, folks–this is meant to be nothing more than a fun simulation, just as the disclaimer at the top says. If it starts to interfere with the actual creators and the actual effort of editing the books, then I’m going to have to shut it down early.

For those not paying attention to this experiment, you should; it’s somewhere between being educational and entertaining, if only for trying to work out how much of the problems thrown in the path of the faux editors is realistic and how much is Tom being a bastard.

My favorite bit is Tom slowly manufacturing an artistic breakdown for Ed Brubaker.

  2. Alan Coil Says:

As far as I am concerned, it is all about how big a bastard Tom is being.

This is a totally unreal simulation and is basically just a waste of time on the part of all involved.

Go do something useful for society.

  3. Anun Says:

I’m finding this great myself. It’s refreshing to see fans treat freelancers like interchangeable toys just as much as editors are accused of doing and then be made to realize there might be repercussions in doing so. It’s also interesting to see just how much input editorial has with marketing — not necessarily a lot.

  4. Brian Hughes Says:

It looks pretty authentic to me: Notice that at no point has anyone actually, y’know, edited a comic book.

  5. aaron Says:

I can just picture Paul Jenkins sweating over his keyboard as he read this.

“What? I’m going to be the new writer if EXILES? Why am I always the last person to hear about these things???”

  6. Tim O'Shea Says:

Please tell me you’re being sarcastic when you post (on a COMIC BOOK BLOG no less), advising someone else to “Go do something useful for society.”

  7. Sean W Says:

Are these folks aware that EXILES isn’t actually a book solely about the “mutant world”?

  8. Daniel Says:

    An Elliott Smith reference. Nice.

  9. JD Says:

“Are these folks aware that EXILES isn’t actually a book solely about the “mutant world”?”

The “editor” in charge of EXILES has decided to do a complete revamp of the book to make it a GENERATION M ongoing, ala X-FORCE or THUNDERBOLTS. No, really.

It’s obvious it won’t work, especially since the “editor” has proceeded to (virtually) make an ass of himself.

    TIM:
I was in a mood the other night.
I have often been accused of being sarcastic.
But there are still many more things to do that are a better use of one’s time than playing “Virtual Editor” against a stacked deck.

    DANIEL:
If I made an Eliott Smith reference, it was inadvertent. I am unfamiliar with his work. I am old and addled. ;)
