Crime author to tackle DC Comics project

August 18th, 2006

The Edinburgh Evening News reports that best-selling Scottish crime writer Ian Rankin, author of the John Rebus mystery books, has been asked by DC Comics to create a series of comics or graphic novels.

Rankin, who spoke Thursday at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, said he’ll begin working on the idea sent by DC once his latest novel, The Naming of the Dead, is released in October.

“It would be great, I really hope it happens,” he’s quoted as saying. “It will either be a stand alone story or a series.”

I’ve never read anything by him but it seems he’s a successful fellow and that success has to be based on something. We’ll just have to wait and see.

He’s a good writer, though his books sometiems repeat themselves. And he’s very much in the same mold as Greg Rucka. Though I do hope he’s not going to be doing more of the DCU same.

Looks like DC went out and found their own Charlie Huston.

Rankin is a real talent. This is excellent news!

Ian’s Edinburgh based Inspector Rebus books are an excellent read. Hopefully he’ll be doing a Vertigo title rather than mainstream DCU.

As a fellow Brit and an Avid reader of Mr Rankin’s work I’m chuffed to hear this – if it’s not Vertigo for him (which is most likely) i’d really like to see him take a hit at something Gotham related as he really understands the gritty underside of life (Rebus could almost be working for the Gotham Ploice Force sharing a desk with Bullock and Montoya – so I’m behind the times a bit!!)

Back in the 80s, a struggling young writer called Ian Rankin used to come into the comics store I managed and buy Batman and Detective Comics. It’d be fascinating to see his take on Batman today.

    One word: Hellblazer
I´d buy that for a LOT of dollars

I’m not a Brit and I’ve read a lot of Rankin’s Rebus books and they are a great series of detective novels. He could really do a number on Batman bringing the detective to Detective.
