The Christian Science Monitor returns from Comic-Con with a decent piece about “tweens” — what ever happened to “pre-teens”? — and graphic novels.
It’s pretty basic, even as these Comics 101 articles go, laying out a solid, no-nonsense definition of “graphic novel,” courtesy of young-adult librarian Robin Brenner, before moving on, briefly, to manga and then a history of the GN format.
It strikes me as something specifically written for parents — you know, “These are those graf-ik nov-els your kids are talking about” — which isn’t a bad thing.
And the Monitor talks to some knowledgeable people, including Brenner, Scott McCloud and Scholastic’s David Saylor.
