Dan Slott: Hardened by Barbie.

Brian Bendis continues his interview series for Wizard, talking to Dan Slott, who reveals his secret comic origins:

I was “Dan the Intern” [in Fabian Niceza's office at Marvel in the '90s]. It was like, “Hey, Dan. What do you think about that?” and “What about this?” And they would go, “Hey, that”s not bad.” It was really neat. How did I survive? Fabian threw things my way. Like answering all the letter columns for all his books. I got like $50 a pop for all of that… Anything that was in Fabian”s stable, I was doing the letter column–whether it was Alf or Barbie or anything. Let me tell you, man, the Barbie letters, there was some scary crap in there. We had this one that said, “Dear Barbie, I really like the book. Thanks to everyone for putting it out.” Very polite, very nice. And at the end of it they added, “P.S. Here”s a picture of me and my guns.” [Laughs] And there was this Polaroid of this guy who looked like Clint Eastwood”s father, in full camo, holding up two Berettas. I was like, “Ahhh!” Some of the books, like Alf or Heathcliff, got a lot of fan mail from mental wards. Those spooked me. There was this one guy who wrote in to Alf regularly. You could tell he wasn”t lifting his pencil up, so all the words were attached for a whole line and it would just be almost like turrets syndrome. It would be like, “AlfisGodGodisChristChristisAlf,” over and over again. So, yeah, it was fun.
